Virgin River Cast: Who Plays the Lead Role in Virgin River?
Virgin River is based on Robyn Carr's books of the same name. It first came out on Netflix in 2021 and has kept us all interested ever since. We've laughed, cried, and fallen in love with some pretty memorable characters over the course of the show's three seasons.
The show is about a nurse from Los Angeles named Mel Monroe who moves to the Virgin River to start over. A lot of the time, the show is about the drama between Mel's new neighbours. But who are the real people behind this made-up town?
The cast of Virgin River is full of talented people who have been working for a long time in both movies and TV. Some people have worked in scary films. Others have won awards. In this guide, we talk about the main people in the show so you can find out who is behind your favourite characters in the romance series.
Even though not everyone is on our list, we have talked about the original cast members who are still around and will be in Virgin River season 5. We talk about their characters, what they've done in the past, and what projects they have coming up. So, without further ado, here is everything you need to know about the cast of Virgin River.
Who's in the Cast of Virgin River?
Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel Monroe
In the Netflix show, Alexandra Breckenridge plays Mel, a nurse from Los Angeles who moves to a small, quiet town to start over. Alexandra Breckenridge has had a lot of success on TV in the past, even before she played our main girl on Virgin River.
On This Is Us, she was known for playing Sophie. She has also been in horror shows like The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and True Blood, so she knows what she's doing.
But TV isn't the only thing she's good at. Breckenridge has been chosen to play the main character in the upcoming thriller film In Limbo. She'll be back for the next season of Virgin River, too, of course.
Martin Henderson as Jack Sheridan
What would the town of Virgin River be like without its hot bartender? In the show, Martin Henderson plays Jack Sheridan, the bar owner who was in the military and has PTSD. He is Mel's crush, and after what happened in Season 4, he is also her baby daddy.

Henderson started acting when he was 13 years old. He has been in shows like Strangers, House, and Grey's Anatomy. He has also been in a number of movies. His most recent role was as Wayne Gilroy in the A24 movie X.
Daniel Gillies as Mark
Virgin River is full of drama, and even though Mark is dead, he has been at the centre of most of it. Mark is Mel's late husband, so we often see Gillies as the character in flashbacks.
Gillies has been on a number of hit shows besides “Virgin River,” where he haunts Mel's memories. Fans of fantasy shows like The Vampire Diaries and The Originals may know him as the vampire Elijah from those shows. He has also been in a Marvel movie. In Spider-Man 2, he played John Jameson. It seems to be his thing to play the hot “other man.”
Gillies has also worked on the other side of the camera. Together with his ex-wife Rachael Leigh Cook, he wrote, directed, and acted in the 2012 movie Broken Kingdom. He also directed an episode of The Originals in 2018, so who knows what will happen? Maybe he will use his skills as a filmmaker on Virgin River season 5.
Colin Lawrence as John “Preacher” Middleton
Colin Lawrence plays Preacher, who is Jack's best friend in the Marines and a cook. But don't be fooled by his cooking skills. The preacher has been a main character for four seasons and has been drugged and taken away before.
Lawrence has been in a lot of shows and movies, especially sci-fi ones, and will be back for season 5 of Virgin River. He is best known for his role as Skulls in the rebooted version of the science fiction show Battlestar Galactica. He has also been in the Blade series, Endgame, and iZombie.
You may also know him as Coach Clayton from the TV show Riverdale or from his part in the Zack Snyder-directed DC movie Watchmen.
Benjamin Hollingsworth as Dan Brady
Benjamin Hollingsworth is the one who plays Dan Brady, the town's resident troublemaker. For those of you who aren't up to date on Dan's legal troubles in Virgin River, the gun that was used to shoot Jack in the second season ended up in good old Dan's car.
Hollingsworth is on the cast list for season 5 of Virgin River, which means he will soon get into more trouble. Fans can see his old work on a number of TV shows until then.
Hollingsworth has been in scary shows like CSI: Miami, Once Upon a Time, The Tomorrow People, and Code Black over the years. But he is best known for playing Kyle Durant on the TV show Suits.
Annette O’Toole as Hope McCrea
Annette O'Toole has confirmed that she will be back to play Hope McCrea in season 5 of Virgin River, even though she did not appear in season 3. (yay). Hope is the mayor of Virgin River. When she's not working for the greater good, she and Doc are in a relationship.
O'Toole has worked for a long time in movies, TV, and even music. In Superman III, which came out in 1983, she played Clark Kent's love interest. In the 1990s, she played the lead role in a miniseries based on Stephen King's book It. And 18 years after her part in Superman, she played Martha Kent on the TV show Smallville, which was set in the DC universe.
O'Toole is a busy actress, and she and her husband, Michael McKean, also make music together. The song “A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow,” which they wrote together, was nominated for an Oscar for the movie “A Mighty Wind.”
Tim Matheson as Doc Mullins
Doc Mullins is the grumpy doctor in Virgin River. When Mel first moved to town, he wasn't too happy about it. Season 3 may have hinted that he was going to retire because of his health, but don't worry, the doctor is still going to be on the Virgin River.
Before he became the good Doctor, Matheson had a long and successful career on and off the screen. He acts and makes movies. Matheson has won two Primetime Emmy Awards as an actor for his role in the drama series The West Wing, which aired in 2000. Hart of Dixie, Child's Play, Red Line, and No Strings Attached are some of the other movies she has worked on.
Matheson has been in charge of episodes of Virgin River since 2019, and he has also been in charge of episodes of popular shows like Suits, Burn Notice, Criminal Minds, and Lucifer.
Lauren Hammersley as Charmaine Roberts
Mel's memory of Mark isn't the only thing that's making things hard between her and Jack. Charmaine Roberts is Jack's ex-wife. After years of rumours, she recently told everyone that Jack isn't the father of her twins (gasp!).
In the Netflix show, Lauren Hammersley plays Charmaine, but this isn't her first time acting on TV or in movies. Hammersley started acting when she was 12 years old. She was in an ad for Fantastic Sand Surprises, which, if you grew up in the 1990s, was the toy you were never allowed to play with.
Since then, she has been in shows like “Mr. D,” “Saving Hope,” and the thriller “Orphan Black.” Hammersley has also worked as a photographer full-time, so it's possible that she will take on more crew-related roles in the production.
