When it comes to accurately capturing the flavour of rural life in his films, Prakash Jha has always been a master, but as Matto Pal, he surpasses even himself. A construction worker who earns minimum wage has everything riding his bike. He’s been commuting to the city on it for 20 years, and he’s had a tough time keeping it running properly.
Matto can’t afford to buy a new bike right now because he has a sick wife and two little kids to take care of (Neeraj and Limka). Instead, he fixes up his old bike himself. When a tractor accidentally runs over his bicycle, it completely alters his world. The rest of the story deals with the consequences of this decision for him, how he acquires a new bicycle, and whether or not this new bike improves his fortunes.
The film reflects the leisurely pace, simplicity, and predictability of rural life. While this saikil saga may not seem important at first glance, it actually contains multiple layers of harsh realities that the poor rural population must face, such as the subpar quality of the educational system, the absence of reliable sources of water, electricity, and healthcare, and the way in which politicians take advantage of the naiveté of the villagers. Matto is locked in a never-ending cycle of poverty, and his bike is a visual representation of that.
Although M. Gani does an excellent job at the helm, the movie drags on for much too long and doesn’t accomplish much. The cinematography is excellent, be it a wide image of a field, a close-up of a lane in a tiny village, or a shot of an overcrowded emergency room. The twang and dialect are captured beautifully by Prakash Jha and the rest of the cast, but the dialogue eventually gets difficult to grasp and loses its charm.
