Updated on 27 January 2022.
Oh My! Netflix, to drop its “live–action version” of one of the most renowned and popular anime series, “Cowboy Bebop“ after twenty years since its release.
Sunrise Inc. conceived and animated the main arc of “Cowboy Bebop”, a Japanese television series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, with scriptwriter Keiko Nobumoto and character designers Toshihiro Kawamoto, mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamane and composer Yoko Kanno.
Cowboy Bebop: What’s the plot?
This sci-fi/western/ neo-noir comedy “Cowboy Bebop” is set in a fictitious future where the Earth has been made uninhabitable, inhospitable, forcing mankind to colonise the Solar System.
An ex-hitman who became an ultracool bounty hunter, Spike Spiegel travels the cosmos in quest of work, commanding an array of bounty hunters on a spaceship named Bebop. Inability to avoid danger, Spiegel’s “I-don’t-care” attitude, and a long list of old, angry adversaries keep the gang in peril, despite their best efforts.
There are a number of other characters that help Spiegel in his quest, including an ex-cop Jet Black, a con artist Faye Valentine with ruthless personality and a young weirdo hacker Edward, as well as Ein, a corgi with advanced powers. Throughout its duration, the program introduces a diverse range of characters, including Spiegel’s arch-nemesis Vicious, the Syndicate’s top hitman and his former flame Julia.

“the Characters” as Seen by Watanabe…
Watanabe and Toshihiro Kawamoto, a character designer collaborated on the characters. As a director, Watanabe saw each character as an extension of himself, or as his polar opposite. A profound sense of loneliness or resignation distinguishes all of the key characters. Each of them was meant to be an outlaw, unsuited to blend in with civilization.
How Many Episodes Are There in This Adaptation?
The original anime series aired on Wowow from October 1998 to April 1999 and had 26 episodes totaling 22 minutes each. However, Netflix has commissioned 10 episodes about one-hour long each for the first season of the show as opposed to the original anime, which might be expanded if a second season is ordered.
When Is the Releasing Date?
Co-produced by Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, “Cowboy Bebop” was released globally on November 19 2021 on Netflix.
Who Is in the Series?
In addition to Joh Cho (Star Trek, Harold and Kumar), who portrays Spike Spiegel, Cowboy Bebop stars a slew of newcomers. The list includes− Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage) in the role of Jet Black, Daniella Pineda (Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom) as Faye Valentine, Alex Hassell (The Boys) as Vicious, and Elena Satine (Revenge) as Julia.
It is also a great news for fans of the anime that Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of the original anime, will serve as a creative consultant on the Netflix adaptation, and Yoko Kanno will compose the opening music. Critics Applaud…
There is no doubt that on both the Japanese and foreign markets, Cowboy Bebop was a critical and commercial smash. This anime won numerous major anime and science fiction awards upon its debut, garnering acclaim from critics who praised the film’s visual aesthetic as well as its characters and plot. Even its English version was hailed as one of the greatest English anime dubs in the industry at the time. When it comes to anime, it is considered a “gateway” series. In the words of producer Sean Akins: “It’s a whole new world”.
To this day, Cowboy Bebop has attracted an international following of fans who like the show’s quirky style of humour, imaginative, vibrant and frequently intergalactic adventures, and jazzy soundtrack by Japanese band seatbelts.
What Can We Anticipate From This New Adaptation?
According to Grillo-Marxuach, there will be a little difference in the framework of the live-action adaptation compared to the original. He says, ” We’re not going to go one-to-one on all those stories [original series] because we’re also trying to tell broader story of Spike Spiegel and the Syndicate, Spike Spiegel and Julia, Spike Spiegel and Vicious and all that… So that we are telling both of the big stories that Cowboy Bebop tells.”
There will be a balance struck between preserving the original series’ essence and updating the tale to today’s audiences. On the list of its most prevalent themes will be adult existential drudgery and loneliness together with a typical “bad guy” approach.
