Long Story Short, a new adult animated series from the creator of BoJack Horseman, is set to premiere on Netflix in August 2025! The cast has been announced, along with some first-look images. Here’s everything we know so far about Long Story Short on Netflix.
Long Story Short is an upcoming Netflix Original adult animated series created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the mind behind the acclaimed animated show BoJack Horseman. Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen serve as executive producers for Tornante Television, while Corey Campodonico and Alex Bulkley from animation studio ShadowMachine act as co-executive producers.
The writing team for season 1 also includes Mehar Sethi, Jordan Young, Kelly Galuska, Keyonna Taylor, Laura Donney, Rachelle Williams-Benary, Elijah Aron, and Taryn Englehart. Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg expressed his enthusiasm about the series with Netflix:
“It is legitimately a thrill and an honor to be back doing what I love most: drafting enthusiastic pull quotes for press releases to Hollywood trade publications. Who says you can’t go home again?!”
Creator/Executive Producer/Voice Actor Raphael Bob-Waksberg attends Netflix’s Bojack Horseman Screening and Reception at Netflix Home Theater on August 20, 2019, in Los Angeles, California.
When Is Long Story Short Coming to Netflix?
Netflix has officially announced that Long Story Short will launch worldwide on August 22, 2025.
This release date coincides with the 11th anniversary of Bojack Horseman.
What Is the Plot of Long Story Short?
Described as a “family comedy through time,” the series follows the Schwooper family across multiple generations. The story is told not in chronological order but through a kaleidoscopic, time-jumping narrative. “The first episode… takes place at a certain year, and we get to meet these kids as kids,” Bob-Waksberg explained at the Annecy International Animation Festival.
“And then in the next episode, we jump to the future and they’re adults with kids of their own.” This storytelling approach allows the show to explore how childhood moments resonate into adulthood, often focusing not on major dramatic events but on the “little t traumas of our lives.”
Will the show appeal to fans of Bojack Horseman? That is the hope, but the two series are quite distinct. “We wanted to be deliberate that it felt different… that it could not be mistaken for a BoJack spinoff,” Bob-Waksberg said. Nevertheless, the creative essence remains: “It’s unmistakably me. It’s unmistakably Lisa.”
Regarding the legacy he hopes the new series will build, Bob-Waksberg advises: “Make the things you want to see, not the things you think you should be making.” He also offers reassurance to skeptics: “If you hated BoJack, this is completely different. So give it a try.”
