Why Tom Cruise Wasn’t at the Oscars and Despite His Absence He is the Widely Talked Topic?

Even though Tom Cruise wasn’t there, he got a lot of attention at the 2023 Oscars.

The film’s star and producer were absent from the ceremony held on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre, even though Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture. Cruise, a Maverick producer who was nominated for a best picture award, has been hard at work on the eighth instalment of his enduring Mission: Impossible series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

But, a spokeswoman for Cruise informed People on Sunday that Cruise would not be present on the big night due to scheduling commitments for Cruise’s presently filming Mission Impossible 8 sequel. If Top Gun: Maverick receives the Best Picture Nomination, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is expected to accept the prize, the magazine claims.

The New York Times reported that Cameron’s co-producer and fellow contender Jon Landau was absent for “personal reasons”. In the days leading up to the awards show, Cameron had attended two Oscar-related events.

Jimmy Kimmel, the host of this year’s Oscars, made light of their absences by joking, “You know, Tom [Cruise] and James Cameron didn’t show up tonight. We were supposed to go to the theatre with two guys, but they never showed up.

“To top it off, everyone adored Top Gun! Tom Cruise playing beach football with his shirt off, really? L Ron Hubbard, the man who founded Scientology, is “hubba hubba,” Kimmel remarked.

Why Tom Cruise Wasn't at the Oscars

A few cynics are speculating that James Cameron’s absence is related to the fact that he was not nominated for best director, and he addressed this by saying: “Some of the cynics are speculating that James Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t earn a best director nomination. He does have a point, even though I find it very difficult to believe that about a man with his level of humility. How, exactly, does the Academy fail to nominate the Avatar director? What do they believe him to be—a woman?

He continued, “You know a show is too lengthy when even James Cameron can’t sit through it,” alluding to the 192 minutes of Avatar: The Way of Water.

Cruise’s next cinematic appearance will be in July’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part I, while the next Avatar movie won’t come out until December of 2024.

The 1986 smash sequel Top Gun: Maverick, starring Cruise, brought in $1.4 billion worldwide. Its enormous success, which demonstrated that Covid-wary moviegoers were eager to go back to the theatre for the appropriate movie, was widely regarded as a sign that the industry had rebounded after months of uncertainty.
