Beth Ann Silverman, née Halpin, and Donald Silverman welcomed Sarah Silverman into the world on December 1st, 1970 in Bedford, New Hampshire. Manchester, New Hampshire, was where she was raised.

In contrast to Donald, who studied to be a social worker and also owned the clothes boutique Crazy Sophie's Outlet, Beth had served as George McGovern's personal campaign photographer and started the theatre group New Thalian Players.

Silverman is the youngest of five siblings; his parents split and later remarried. Her sister Jeffrey Michael passed away when he was just three months old; her sisters are Reform rabbi Susan Silverman, author Jodyne Speyer, and actress Laura Silverman.

At the age of 17, Silverman made his stand-up comedy debut in Boston.
