At the Golden Globes, Niecy Nash-Betts is pleased to be her own self. In addition to receiving a nomination for her performance in Monster: Dahmer – The Jeffrey Dahmer Story tonight, Nash-Betts was on hand to deliver the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series. She made use of the opportunity to speak publicly about her sexuality and did it in a bold and confident manner when she was on stage.
As Nash-Betts approached the stage to hand out the award, she acknowledged the cheers from the crowd and expressed gratitude for their support. “I don’t know if you’re clapping because you like the dress, because I’m here, or because I’m gay now, but I’ll take it!” she said.
Who is Niecy Nash?
Comedian, actor, and TV host Niecy Nash (born Carol Denise Betts) is a household name in the United States. The 52-year-old has been featured on popular shows including Clean House and Reno 911, as well as the horror anthology Claws.
On March 24, Deadline announced that Niecy would be joining Evan Peters, Penelope Ann Miller, and Colin Ford in Netflix's upcoming limited series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. In the fall of 2022, she also made her debut in the drama series The Rookie: Feds.

Who is Niecy Nash Currently Married to?
Nash married Jessica Betts in August of 2020, which caught her followers by surprise. Betts is not just a great vocalist and songwriter, but also a self-taught guitarist.
She posted a vintage video of herself playing on the New York City subway system in August of 2021. She captioned the image, “New York Subway- A Express Train. 65 mph – Taught myself how to play while living n New York.. Just me and my 🎸.”
In 2005, Betts participated alongside Missy Elliott on the reality show The Road to Stardom, following the release of her debut single “Get Up” in 2000. The “Work It” rapper and reality singing competition only lasted one season on UPN. After meeting the woman who would become her future spouse in the acting world, Betts scored a small role on Nash's TNT sitcom Claws in 2018.
When Did She First Met Her?
In 2015, they made their first online connection, sharing a common interest in music. They began to get along after some time. According to Nash's 2020 statement to PEOPLE, “I never saw her as someone I would date. But we began to see each other in a way we never had before.”
However, shifting from friendship to romance wasn't easy. Nash discussed her reluctance to begin dating during her interview on Red Table Talk. She admitted, “I was fearful our friendship might not survive it. I never want [Jessica] to not be in my life, so I don't know what the running rules are.”

Nash claims that she and Betts both proposed on the same day, with Betts getting the upper hand. Nash told PEOPLE that she was taken aback by the news because they'd been arguing all day.
“[Jessica] was like, ‘You know what? You've been getting on my nerves all day. But if anybody is going to get on my nerves, I want it to be you,' ” Nash recalled. “Then she said, ‘You are absolutely the best thing that has ever happened to me. Marry me, Cora.' That's her nickname for me, is Cora.”
Betts had no idea what generally happened after Nash said “yes.” And Nash carried on: “I was like, ‘Well, we're non-traditional people. Hold on one second.' I went upstairs and then I came back down because I had a ring for her. And then I asked her to marry me. So we both proposed to each other the same night, which is weird but fun.”With the words, “I just know that this is the most beautiful soul I've ever met in my life, and you mine.” Nash made up her mind that she didn't want to be without Betts. Nash had only dated guys up until she started dating Betts.
Who Was She Earlier Married to?
Having three children from her marriages to Jay Tucker and Don Nash, Nash has been married twice. After eight years of marriage, Nash and Tucker announced their split in October of 2019.
“We believe in the beauty of truth. Always have,” she claimed in an Instagram post. “Our truth is that in this season of our lives, we are better friends than partners in marriage. Our union was such a gorgeous ride. And as we go our separate ways now, we feel fortunate for the love we share – present tense.

Nash came out as bisexual in September of 2020. She told PEOPLE, “I don't feel like my marriage is my coming out of anywhere, but rather a going into myself and being honest about who I love, [My marriage] has absolutely nothing to do with gender and it has everything to do with her soul.”
LGBTQ+ Visibility in Hip-hop
Betts gave an interview to TheGrio in 2022, on the significance of LGBTQ+ visibility in hip-hop. “My wife and I, we say all the time, representation matters, it really does,” she said. “Because now I know that little young girl or that little young boy will see themselves in someone who is like myself, someone who is like my wife, or anyone! It's important to see yourself.”
Betts had sung “Catch Me” at the GLAAD Media Awards the year before. She told 2021's The Advocate that “love has no gender.” “It has no boundaries. And a person, regardless of whatever race or sex they are, should be free enough to love who you want to love and be very unapologetic about it.”
