Who is Cody Johnson?
“CoJo” or Cody Daniel Johnson was born and raised by his parents, Sheila and Carl Johnson, in East Texas. Johnson picked up the guitar at the age of 12.
He is a singer-songwriter for country music in America. Before releasing his first major-label album, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, in January 2019, he self-released six albums, including Gotta Be Me, which debuted at number two on Billboard’s Country Albums chart.
He recently received three nominations from the American Music Awards and is up for four CMA Awards.
Let’s Go Though His Career Journey
He founded the Cody Johnson Band in 2006 alongside his father Carl and the percussionist Nathan Reedy. They collaborated to create the album Black and White Label.
The band expanded in 2006, hiring Matt Rogers to play lead guitar, and at Huntsville’s Shenanigans and Confetti’s Club, they captured a live album, Live and Rocking. Johnson’s father left the band after the album was released.
In 2009, bass guitarist Danny Salinas joined the group. Six Strings One Dream, their debut album with professional production, was made available in September 2009.
The album’s three singles all debuted in the top 10 on the Texas music charts. The band added Chris Whitten on fiddle and Jeff Smith on lead guitar after the album’s release. In 2010, Whitten was replaced on fiddle by Jody Bartula.
Trent Willmon produced Johnson’s subsequent album, A Different Day, which was released in 2011. 2011 Texas Regional Music Award for New Male Vocalist of the Year went to Johnson. Johnson quit his day job with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice following the victory so that he could devote all of his time to music.
In 2012, he collaborated on the Dancin’ and Drinkin’ at Johnson Park Tour with Kyle Park. The Rockin’ CJB’s took the place of Johnson’s band in 2012, with Reedy, Smith, Bartula, and bassist Joey Pruski joining them.
Cowboy Like Me, Johnson’s fifth album, was made available on January 14, 2014. Johnson’s second Trent Willmon-produced album was released.
It debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and number 33 on the Billboard 200 after selling 8,000 copies in its first week of availability. As of 2014, Miles Stone on drums, Smith, Bartula, and Pruski made up Johnson’s band.
Gotta Be Me, the sixth album, was made available on August 5, 2016. The album sold 23,000 copies in the US in its first week and debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Country Albums list. Johnson’s most popular record to date was made without the help of a major label or extensive radio airplay.
