Where Was Wednesday Filmed? Facts About the Filming Locations of Netflix’s Dark Drama!
The new hit show on Netflix, Wednesday, is full of gothic interiors, creepy forests, and small-town life. The super-hit show, which is now Netflix’s third most-watched English-language show ever, is based on the Addams Family.
It follows sad teenager Wednesday Addams as she starts a new school. Wednesday is sent to Nevermore Academy, a castle in the middle of a forest near the quaint town of Jericho, Vermont, which is a boarding school for outcasts. Wednesday was kicked out of school because of a bad situation involving some swimmers and some piranhas.
To make sure that the creepy, Gothic show lived up to the standards set by the famous Addams family characters, the show and its cast went to Romania and filmed in a number of beautiful places around the country.
Read on to find out the top Wednesday filming locations you must see when you visit one of the most underrated places to visit in Europe.
Cantacuzino Castle
Most of the first season of Wednesday takes place at Nevermore Academy, whose neo-gothic exterior is actually the Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, Romania, which is in the Carpathian mountains. It was once the summer home of Romania’s Prime Minister, Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino.
Today, not only does it give Wednesday’s Nevermore School a creepy exterior, but it’s also open to the public and gives tours of the building, its gardens, and even an art gallery. A lot of Wednesday was filmed in Buşteni in the middle of winter, which gave it a starkly beautiful but slightly creepy look.
Casa Monteoru
Casa Monteoru is in Bucharest, Romania. We know that Bucharest has been talked about before, but this house is special enough to be talked about on its own. The inside of Nevermore Academy, where Wednesday finally makes some friends, was the house.
Palatul Monteoru & Casa Niculescu-Dorobantu
So, the outside of Nevermore is done. But where did they film the scenes inside? For those, you’ll have to go to Palatul Monteoru and Casa Niculescu Dorobantu, two other beautiful Neo-Gothic buildings.
The Monteoru House, or Palatul Monteoru, was built in 1874. It is easy to find in downtown Bucharest. It used to be the headquarters of the Writers of Romania Union, but now it’s a lively arts centre with live music, fairs, and shows. Nice.
If you want to see more places where Wednesday was filmed, you’ll have to go to Casa Niculescu-Dorobantu. This is where the rest of Nevermore’s interior shots were taken. Bucharest has another Neo-Gothic masterpiece. Can you see why Tim Burton chose this city?
Jericho, Vermont
Even though there is a real Jericho, Vermont, the whole town of Wednesday was built at Bucharest Film Studios, also called Buftea Studios, for the show. The town square, Pilgrim World, and the sheriff’s house are all part of this. Along with the sets, some of the outside scenes near Nevermore were shot in real places.
For example, the train station scenes were shot at Gara Regala, which is the station for the mountain town of Sinaia in the Bușteni region. The Poe Cup was filmed on two lakes in Romania called Brănești and Sterbei, where those beautiful lake scenes took place.
Bucharest Botanical Gardens
Nevermore isn’t just about the fancy rooms. It also has a beautiful greenhouse that you can, in fact, visit in Romania. And what better place than the Bucharest Botanical Gardens for a greenhouse?
Even though the gardens are strangely close to an industrial area, they have 45 acres of lush greenery, including tall pine trees, a lily pond, and a herb garden.
When it’s not being used for big-budget Netflix shows, locals treat this place like a park, walking around its lush lawns and admiring the tropical plants all day.
