Who is Rand Gauthier?

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014, Gauthier described his childhood in Los Angeles as troubled: His parents split while he was young, and his mother eventually joined the “mentally inferior” Jehovah’s Witnesses, according to Gauthier. Even more strained was his connection with his father, the actor Dick Gautier.

As an adult, Gauthier changed his name to differentiate himself from his father, whom he remembers as having a short fuse and being quickly dissatisfied. Gautier was featured in the 1960 Broadway version of Bye Bye Birdie and the 1960s sitcom Get Smart, which lampooned James Bond.

As a teenager, he began dating an adult-film actress, who introduced him to the business. He told Rolling Stone that he found “a bunch of dudes watching me [have sex] kind of gross” despite having appeared in multiple pornographic films.

Instead, he became an electrician, which led to a job renovating the Los Angeles home of Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson. According to Gauthier, the couple dismissed him despite owing him $20,000 because his work was subpar.

When he and a coworker returned to the residence to get their equipment, Lee threatened them with a firearm. This caused Gauthier’s wounded pride to reach its breaking point, and he determined to plunder the house. “I was never very well-liked,” he told Rolling Stone. “But I had never been held at gunpoint. It messed with my mind.”

Rand Gauthier Stole the Tape for What Reason?

In 1995, Tommy Lee allegedly owed Gauthier $20,000 for his services, since Gauthier was supposedly fed up with Lee and Anderson and refused to work on their property.

Rolling Stone says that when he and a general contractor returned to the couple’s Mulholland Highway estate to retrieve their tools, Lee allegedly pointed a shotgun at Gauthier and urged him to leave his property.

Gauthier then resolved to seek retribution and scouted the couple’s property, where he took a safe and sawed it apart, exposing firearms, jewelry, and, yep, an iconic home video of the pair.

He took the tape to a North Hollywood porn studio, where he and adult film producer Milton Ingley created copies of the tape before searching for a distributor who would enable them to disseminate the video without Lee and Anderson’s signed releases.

After receiving funds from Louis “Butchie” Peraino, a man with ties to a New York criminal family, Gauthier and his partner began advertising online and selling and shipping recordings to customers.

After the distribution of the cassettes, Gauthier was so fearful of punishment that he spent nearly a year in hiding. At this point, he had already been attacked by a biker group purported to be Tommy Lee’s ally.

In 1997, Gauthier and his business partner were forced to close their website despite not having repaid their mafia-connected distributor, resulting in Gauthier working as a debt collector for the mob to repay his portion of the debt.
