Joe and Jill first met in 1975, following the tragic deaths of the politician’s first wife, Neilia Hunter Biden, and their infant daughter Naomi “Amy” in a car accident in 1972.
Joe was a 33-year-old United States senator, and Jill was a 24-year-old college senior at the time of the incident. Both of them had previously been married.
Jill describes how she stood by and watched as “EMTs carried him down the steps of our house on a stretcher” in her book.
The couple exchanged vows at the United Nations Chapel in New York City, followed by a reception lunch at the Sign of the Dove restaurant in the city.
“Despite the fact that she has devoted her life to education, she does not consider herself to be a teacher; rather, she considers herself to be a person.
