The story of the movie revolves around the relationship between grandfather and grandchildren. Ed Marino, the grandfather of children, has lost his wife recently. Meanwhile, his daughter, Sally, visits him and wishes to take him home with her family.

Ed was not ready to leave the house as he was the one to build it on his own. Sally convinces him to come with her and gives him his son Peter’s room. After getting shifted from his room to the attic, Peter gets upset. Sally, Arthur, and the other two children, Mia and Jenny, welcome him. On the first day, Ed remains in his new room and thinks about his wife.

Peter tells about the incidents to his friends. After spending a night in the attic, Peter decides to declare war against his grandpa. Ed agrees to do so but with some rules. Rules were that the other people’s belongings will remain unharmed, and the family should not be involved in it. They both start playing silly pranks on each other. After learning that Peter is being bullied by a person, they help him out. At Jenny’s Christmas-themed birthday party, they continue to prank each other and unfortunately reveal about the war to everyone. Jerry, who was dressed up as Santa, gets ejected from his chair and injures many guests. Later, Ed gets injured and taken for medication to the hospital. On the other hand, Peter and Mia receive a punishment work arrest. Before the arrival of Sally, Ed leaves for his old house from the hospital. Peter requests him to return home. Both of them start living peacefully until Ed shifts with Diane. He was in a relationship with Diane. Peter becomes angry and declares war against both of them.

The War With Grandpa was initially set to be released on 21st April 2017 by Dimension Films of The Weinstein Company. Due to the changes in the photography location, it got postponed to 20th October 2017. In August, it got delayed again to 23rd February 2018.

When less than a month was left for the release, it got pulled back again from its release date. In March 2018, it was announced that The Weinstein Company will no longer be able to distribute the film. The producers of the film took the rights of distribution from the company.
