Founded in 1923, the club spent most of its history in the lower divisions of Spanish football, making its La Liga debut only in 1998. Villarreal gained some league stability in the twenty-first century, and the team made its first appearance in the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
The team also played in the UEFA Europa League during this period, but was demoted in 2012, returned the following year, and has stayed in the top division. Villarreal won their first major trophy in 2021 when they beat Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League Final.

Fernando Roig has owned Villarreal for nearly 24 years and purchased the Liga side for €432,000 ($528,000). The team has become a fixture in LaLiga during his ownership, competing for berths in the Champions League and the Europa League.

Villarreal advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2009, due to Arnaut Danjuma‘s early goal in the first leg on Wednesday.
Villarreal will be playing in their first major European final when they take on Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday, April 6, 2022. The game will be held in Gdansk, Poland, on Thursday, May 27, with kick-off at 12:30 a.m. IST.
Roig will not be attending Gdansk on Wednesday night when Villarreal takes on Manchester United in their most important match in club history. He was quarantined at home after contracting coronavirus, but he was authorized to leave after a negative PCR test.
Despite this, UEFA has denied him permission, claiming that not enough time has passed. A triumph would be a fair reflection of Villarreal’s evolution under Roig’s management, with a bit of town of roughly 50,000 achieving European glory.
