Tyler Perry, is an American actor, director, dramatist, and producer. It’s safe to say that Tyler Perry is one of Hollywood’s most successful film and television directors. He’s worked as a director and producer on over 30 films, 20 stage productions, and eight television shows. Each year, he earns between $200 and $250 million from his vast entertainment company. ViacomCBS is the sole source of his production company’s $150 million in annual revenue.
Tyler is a self-made tycoon who built his fortune from scratch. I Know I’ve Been Changed was the first play he wrote and staged, and he established his empire from there. It’s no surprise that Tyler managed to turn his one-person show into the multi-billion dollar multi-media giant today while still living out of his van. His costs, income, and profits are all his own.
Early years of Tyler Perry
E. Perry Jr. was born on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana, as Emmitt Perry III. He didn’t finish high school, but he received a GED certificate. Tyler began writing to help him heal his mental wounds after various family members abused him as a child. Oprah Winfrey’s talk show about the therapeutic power of writing prompted him to pursue a career in the field in his early twenties.
Perry found writing to be a valuable kind of stress relief. A sequence of letters he wrote to himself later inspired the musical I Know I’ve Been Changed. His theatrical shows immediately garnered a cult following in Atlanta and worldwide, peaking at more than 35,000 audience members per week.
Perry reportedly sold more than $100 million in tickets to his plays and $30 million in associated videos and products before making a single Hollywood movie.
Affiliation with the Public of Tyler Perry
Perry approached production company Lionsgate with a proposal based on his domestic success. Perry would contribute half of the $5.5 million needed for an upcoming picture. When it came to marketing and distribution, Lionsgate pocketed a modest 12 percent cut. After those costs, they would each receive an equal share of the profits. Lionsgate has a deal with Perry in which he gets to own and profit from all of the content. Diary of a Mad Black Woman was the first film they made together under this agreement in 2005. More than $150 million in additional revenue came from TV syndication and home video sales for the film, which took in $50.6 million in domestic box office sales.
In 2006, Perry made his feature picture directing debut with Madea’s Family Reunion, which debuted with $30.3 million at the top of the box office. The final box office total for the picture was $65 million. Moreover, he has been responsible for directing each of the subsequent Madea films.
Tyler was a producer on 14 “Madea” films. Films such as these made approximately $700 million in ticket sales. Each picture had a budget of under $10 million. Most of the revenues from each of Perry’s films go to him because he writes, directs, and produces them all. Nearly $300 million of the total funds available.
Perry’s films are often aimed toward African-American audiences, and there are often hints of Christianity in them.
