Top 5 Most Expensive Comic Book Movies | Latest Updates 2023!

It’s no secret that superhero movies make a lot of money for the movie industry. Four of the ten most successful movies of all time are based on comic books, and each of them made billions of dollars at the box office. But when people buy a lot of tickets, the production budget tends to be big.

Even though a movie’s budget doesn’t always show how successful it will be, a bigger budget gives it a better chance of giving its loyal fans what they want. And since people want more and more comic book movies, whether they come from Marvel, DC, or somewhere else, it makes sense that making these kinds of movies costs a lot.

1. Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron came out on May 1, 2015, and made $1.4 billion at the box office. It cost $365 million to make. This made it the most expensive comic book movie ever made and the second most expensive movie ever, right behind Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which cost $379 million to make.

Age of Ultron was the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time when it came out. As of March 2022, it had dropped to the twelfth spot, behind Frozen II and Furious 7. Age of Ultron, which came out on April 13, 2015, was the second-to-last movie in Phase Two of the MCU. Both critics and audiences liked it a lot.

2. “Infinity War” and “Endgame”

Top 5 Most Expensive Comic Book Movies

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame are the 19th and 22nd movies (MCU). Infinity War and Endgame are the first full-length movies to be shot entirely in digital IMAX. This was made possible by new camera technology from The Arri Group. Joe and Anthony Russo are in charge of both movies. They were also in charge of the second and third parts of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Civil War (2016).

Both Infinity War and Endgame were shot at the same time, starting on January 23, 2017, and ending on January 11, 2018. There was a break in July, but filming resumed in August. Together, they have the biggest budget of any two-part movie ever made, at $681 million, with Infinity War costing $325 million and Endgame costing $356 million. Endgame was the highest-grossing movie of all time from May 4, 2019, to March 13, 2021. It made a total of $2.798 billion around the world. This would be surpassed and “reclaimed” by the previous highest-grossing movie in China.

3. Justice League

Joss Whedon’s poor attempt to rebuild Zack Snyder’s Justice League was a direct follow-up to Batman v. Superman. It cost an estimated $300 million to make, making it the fifth most expensive movie ever made, tied with At World’s End, the final film in Gore Verbinski’s Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Warner Bros. had to make $750 million to break even, but Justice League only made $657 million worldwide. This means that Warner Bros. lost $60 million and the movie was a “box office bomb.”

The movie opened on November 17, 2017, and made $278 million around the world. This was less than the $325–355 million that was expected. Forbes blamed Joss Whedon for the failure of Justice League at the box office in 2018. Whedon’s direction and post-production management tried to “undo” Zack Snyder’s vision in order to appeal to a wider audience, but this turned off the movie’s core audience. After it came out, fans started to ask for a “Snyder Cut,” which finally came out on HBO Max in March 2021.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was directed by Zack Snyder and cost $263 million to make, made $873 million at the box office. Dawn of Justice, which came out on March 19, 2016, was the first live-action movie with both Batman and Superman, as well as the first movie version of Wonder Woman.

Dawn of Justice was the fifth-biggest movie of all time when it came out. It made $422 million worldwide in its first weekend, making it the fourth movie to open with more than $400 million. Dawn of Justice had a “historic” drop in ticket sales during its second weekend. Sales went down by 81.2%, making it one of the biggest drops from Friday to Friday in history.

5. Spider-Man 3

Sam Raimi’s last Spider-Man movie cost an estimated $258 million to make, which, when it came out in 2007, was the most expensive budget of any movie ever made. Spider-Man 3 also broke the record for “fastest-grossing film” in a single day at the box office on its first Friday, making $104 million. On Saturday, it broke that record again, making $117 million.

Up until 2019, Spider-Man 3 was also the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie ever, making $895 million at the box office. Only Far From Home, which made over $1 billion during its theatrical run, made more money than Spider-Man 3.
