Top 10 Highest-Grossing Movies | Latest Updates 2023!
Last year, when it came to the global box office, James Cameron was once again king of the world. Avatar: Way of the Water didn’t do as well as its predecessor, but it still sold enough tickets to be the highest-grossing movie of 2022 and the fourth-highest-grossing movie of all time. With $718 million in U.S. ticket sales, Tom Cruise’s return as Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell was the most popular movie, but it was only the second most popular movie worldwide.
The top nine movies on this list were either sequels or reboots, with the exception of the Chinese sci-fi comedy Moon Man, which went against the trend. Here are the 10 movies that made the most money around the world in 2022.
10. Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: The Way of Water came out on December 16, 2022. It made $134.1 million in its first weekend. At the time this was written, Avatar: The Way of Water hadn’t finished its second weekend, so it wasn’t clear how much it would drop off. However, if it acts like James Cameron’s last two movies, it won’t act like a typical blockbuster and will make most of its money over time. Avatar: The Way of Water has the biggest opening weekend of any James Cameron movie and the sixth-biggest opening weekend of any movie in 2022. It’s too soon to tell how well the movie will do, but as of this writing, it’s the 10th highest-grossing movie in the U.S. in 2022, with $183 million.
9. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game came out on April 8, 2022, and made $72.1 million in its first weekend. Its box office dropped by 59.4% in its second weekend, and it made a total of $190,9 million in the United States. It had the worst opening weekend of any of the top 10 movies in the U.S., and its second-weekend drop was a bit higher than the average of 57.81% for the top 10, but it still did well enough to land in ninth place (although Avatar: The Way of Water is sure to pass it before the end of December).
8. Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home came out on December 17, 2022. It made $260.1 million in its first weekend. Its second-weekend box office dropped by 67.5 per cent, and it made a total of $804.8 at the domestic box office. Even though it didn’t come out in 2022, it made $231.8 million in the U.S. that year, which was enough to make it the eighth highest-grossing movie of the year.
7. Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor: Love and Thunder came out on July 8, 2022. It made $144.2 million in its first weekend. Its box office dropped by 67.7 per cent in its second weekend, and it made a total of $343,3 in the United States. Thor: Love and Thunder had the fifth-highest opening weekend in the U.S., but its second-weekend drop of 67.7% was bigger than any other movie in the top 10, and it was almost 10 points higher than the average drop of 67.8%.
6. Batman
Batman came out on March 4, 2022, and made $134 million in its first weekend. Its box office dropped by 50.4% in its second weekend, and it made a total of $369.3 million. Batman’s opening weekend is the fourth-lowest of the top 10 movies of 2022, but it’s only a little less than what Avatar: The Way of Water made in its first weekend. The success of Batman at the box office can be attributed to the fact that it has moderately strong legs. Its second-weekend drop of 50.4% is the second lowest of the top 10 movies, but it’s still 21 points higher than that of Top Gun: Maverick.
5. Minions: The Rise of Gru
Minions: The Rise of Gru came out on July 1, 2022. It made $107 million in its first weekend. Its box office dropped by 56.9% in its second weekend, and it made a total of $369.5 million. Minions: The Rise of Gru had the second-lowest opening weekend of the top 10 movies, but its second-weekend drop of 56.9 is the third best (after Top Gun: Maverick and The Batman).
4. Jurassic World: Dominion
Jurassic World: Dominion came out on June 10, 2022, and made $145 million in its first weekend. Its box office dropped by 59.2% in its second weekend, and it made a total of $376 million. Jurassic World: Dominion had the third-best opening weekend in the U.S. in 2022, but its legs were only average (59.2% is just over 2% above average), so its total box office run put it in fourth place in the U.S.
3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came out on May 6, 2022. It made $187.4 million in its first weekend. It made 67 per cent less money in its second weekend, and it made a total of $411.3 million. Spider-Man: No Way Home made a lot of money in 2022 because it opened to $260 million, but since it opened in December 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has the biggest opening weekend in the United States in 2022. Even though it had a good start, Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness had the second-worst drop in the top 10 (67%) in its second weekend (behind Thor: Love and Thunder).
2. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever came out on November 11, 2022. It made $181.3 million in its first weekend at the box office. Its box office dropped by 63.3% in its second weekend, and it made a total of $421.7 million. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had the second-best opening weekend in the U.S. in 2022, after Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness. However, like the other Marvel movies, it didn’t do well after the first weekend, coming in third worst out of the top 10. Even so, it was still the second-highest-grossing movie of 2022.
1. Top Gun: Maverick
Top Gun: Maverick came out on May 27, 2022, and made $126.7 million in its first weekend. Its box office dropped by 28.9 per cent in its second weekend, and it ended up making a total of b. Top Gun: Maverick had the third-lowest opening weekend box office, but it did much better than any other movie in the top 10, dropping less than 30% compared to the average drop of 57%. Batman had the next lowest drop, at 50.4%. Top Gun: Maverick is the highest-grossing movie in the United States this year, and it will finish the year on top. However, if Avatar: The Way of Water has legs as strong as the first Avatar, it could catch Top Gun: Maverick’s total sometime in 2023.
