CODA stands for “children of deaf adults,” precisely what Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones) is. Ruby is the only hearing member of her culturally deaf family. She is the daughter of Jackie (Marlee Matlin) and Frank (Troy Kotsur) and the sister of Leo (Daniel Durant). On top of trying to finish school, she works on her family’s fishing boat.
She goes out on the water with her brother and father and helps her dad do business by translating. She feels a lot of pressure to be the voice of her family to the world, so she turns to singing to let off steam. She is interested in music, which could lead her to go to college in Boston at Berklee.
CODA is a very emotional, heartfelt play that is led by actors who are deaf. Ruby’s coming-of-age story will tug at the heartstrings of anyone who knows how hard it is to balance family obligations with one’s hopes and dreams. — Thérèse Lacson

Director: Spike Jonze
Writer: Spike Jonze, Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz
Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz are in this.
Run Time: 2 hr
In Beastie Boys Story, a mix of live performances and documentary footage makes for an exciting movie. The film comprises three live shows where former Beastie Boys members Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz tell their fans about their careers and friendship.
It gives the two men a chance to tell their stories again and even says sorry for some of the rude things they said in their earlier work. It’s fun to see Diamond and Horovitz feed off the crowd’s energy, but Beastie Boys Story ends with a powerful emotional punch.
Diamond and Horovitz pay a heartfelt tribute to their bandmate and best friend, Adam Yauch, who passed away. -Liam Gaughan

Who Are You, Charlie Brown?, narrated by Lupita Nyong’o, shows how Schulz used things from his own life to write the classic comic strips. The documentary has interviews with famous people who talk about how much they like Peanuts. Al Roker’s comments about how the character Franklin makes him feel like himself are very insightful. -Liam Gaughan
Swan Song (2021)
Benjamin Cleary is the director.
Benjamin Cleary is the author.
Mahershela Ali, Awkwafina, Glenn Close, and Naomie Harris are in the cast.
Run Time: 1 hr 56 min
Swan Song isn’t the high-concept science fiction thriller you might have thought it would be. The movie takes place in a world where cloning technology has been created in the future. Cameron Turner (Mahershela Ali) finds out that he has a disease that will kill him and that he only has a few months left to live.
He has to make a hard choice: Should he let an identical clone take his place and make sure that his family is happy? Swan Song does a great job of not making the premise into a thriller. It stays focused on the moral and emotional questions Cameron has to answer. -Liam Gaughan
Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You (2021)
Thom Zimny is the director.
Writer: Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen, Roy Bittan, Nils Lofgren, Patti Scialfa, Garry Tallent, and Steven Van Zandt are among the people in the cast.
Run Time: 1 hr 30 min
Bruce Springsteen has been doing better lately. Between the coming-of-age movie Blinded by the Light, the documentary Western Stars, and Netflix’s Springsteen on Broadway, “the Boss” has shown himself to a new generation of fans. Springsteen’s Letter to You, which will come out in 2020, is a quieter, more reflective piece.
The album came out at the same time as this Apple TV documentary, in which Springsteen talks about how he was dealing with his death in a world without COVID. Springsteen is known for being honest, but he has never been so sad and open in public before.
Letter to You is a treat for “the Boss” fans who have listened to him for a long time. It may also help younger people understand why Springsteen became the voice of a generation. -Liam Gaughan

Mesh is a wolf walker, which means that her spirit leaves her body and takes the form of a wolf. Her mother’s wolf has gone missing, so she watches over her mother’s sleeping body while looking for the wolf.
When the two girls run into each other, Mebh bites Robyn because she is stuck in a trap. After the 9/11 attacks, 38 planes coming from Europe were sent to a small island off the coast of Canada instead. The small town of Gander had to house, clothe, and feed 7,000 people (and 19 animals) all at once, while the rest of the world waited to see what would happen next. The musical, based on a true story, opened on Broadway in 2017.
The movie is a performance of the Broadway show that was filmed in March 2020 in front of an invited audience. Some of the original cast of the Broadway show was there. It’s a moving story with solid music that shows what can happen when people from far away come together. — Jennifer McHugh
On The Rocks (2020)
Sofia Coppola is the director.
Sofia Coppola is the author of this film.
Rashida Jones, Bill Murray, and Marlon Wayans star in this film.
1 hr 36 min of running time
Sofia Coppola’s comedy-drama will be released in 2020. In On The Rocks, Rashida Jones and Bill Murray star as Laura and Felix, respectively. Laura is an author who is stuck in a rut as she raises her two girls while her husband, Dean (Marlon Wayans), appears to be working nonstop.
Laura suspects Dean is having an affair after a few suspicious lapses, so she enlists the help of her father, Felix. Felix is an eloquent man who can talk his way out of any difficulty and is an affluent art dealer who hasn’t always been Laura’s most present father.
Together, they go on an espionage and reconnecting journey across New York City and Mexico. In comparison to Coppola’s prior efforts, On The Rocks flew under the radar. That’s most likely because it went straight to Apple TV during a pandemic. Even though it doesn’t have the same allure as Lost in Translation, Coppola and Murray go together like coffee and cream, which remains true 17 years later.
It’s full of Coppola’s trademark wit, and Bill Murray remains the coolest cat in town (apart from Garfield). Emma Kiely —
Boys State (2020)
Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss are the directors.
1 hr 49 min of running time
Boys State is a documentary at its best when it is a character study of today’s young people. It’s a profile of the many Texas teenagers who attend a mock government camp directed by Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss. It is a gloomy yet informative look at how our politics have gotten so perverted, even in the next generation of leaders.
Steven Garza, the film’s heart, attempts to maintain his moral compass when everyone else seems content to manipulate and backstab at will. A politically astute and cold leader who throws everything off balance, Ben Feinstein is a crucial figure among these backstabbers.
It’s both fascinating and terrifying, Shedding Light on the frightening ability of even young people to become ruthless political strategists. It’s an intensely unsettling experience with a few bright spots, but they’re few and far between. It’s unafraid to capture everything that this unusual youth camp and the individuals who attend it reveal about ourselves. Chase Hutchinson (@ChaseHutchinson)
Apple TV+ is one of the strangest streaming services because it has almost no licensed TV shows or movies and only a few of its shows. Also, it only costs $4.99 a month or is free for a year if you just bought a new eligible device. Apple is taking a clear “quality over quantity” approach, spreading its money across genres and aiming to make its subscribers (many of whom signed up when they bought one of its tech products) think of it as a real competitor.
