1. Dominique Fishback
If you haven’t seen Project Power yet, this is your sign from the powers (no pun intended) to grab your favourite movie snacks and other munchies, get settled in, and watch it on Netflix now. We know from the Publix ad preview that you can get the buy-one-get-one free Nabisco Ritz cracker boxes or the Easter sweet must-haves to enjoy while you lose yourself in this epic movie. It features this powerhouse New York native who has been pushing her weight in the industry for a while now and is truly beginning to shine and receive much-deserved recognition. You can also see her in the critically acclaimed movie, ‘The Hate You Give’ and expect her to appear alongside Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield in an upcoming film titled ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’.
2. Anthony Ramos
When you do a Google search of Anthony Ramos Martinez you will mostly find fan-written and small pushing house publications on him despite his commendable success so far. For one, he played John Laurens and Phillip Hamilton in one of Broadway’s most revered musical. He is also in Spike Lee’s remake of ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ into a series where Ramos played young Mars Blackmon. This summer he is set to play the lead role in the much anticipated ‘In the Heights’ and further showcase and cement himself as a highly multi-talented thespian.
3. Lauren Ridloff
Former Miss Deaf America 2002, Lauren Ridloff’s trajectory has been sensational since her acting debut on the revival of ‘Children of a Lesser God’, which gained her the Tony nod in 2017. You might also recognise her from John Legend’s ‘Love Me Now’ music video as well as her roles alongside Hollywood veterans such as Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams. Her most prominent acting gig is her role as Connie in ‘The Walking Dead’ which has her placed firmly on our radar as an actor to keep our eyes on. Most excitingly, she is set to become Marvel’s first deaf superhero in the forthcoming blockbuster, ‘Eternals’.
4. Taylor Paige
“She is blowing up”, that’s what fellow actor Jessie Williams had to say about Taylor Paige during an interview with GQ, and he is not wrong. She has been booked and remains booked and busy. A trained dancer who was born and raised in Inglewood California, she had her first major big-screen break in the biographical comedy-drama ‘Zola’, directed by Janicza Bravo. Since this big break, she has booked only big movie roles working alongside big names like Viola Davis, Denzel Washington and Chadwick Bosman. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is a huge feat for her career and so will Eddie Hung’s ‘Boogie’, where she will be starring alongside Pop Smoke.
5. Kae Alexander
A Brit who has had several worthy crossovers into Hollywood, Kae Alexander first got the world’s attention as Jing Hua in BBC’s sitcom, ‘Bad Education’. Her other major role before appearing more prominently on American television, her other major standout role was on BBC’s crime thriller, Hard Son. In the American space, she has graced our screens appearing on the sixth season of HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, alongside Angelina Jolie. This year, she is expected to star in Tom Hardiman’s debut film, ‘Medusa Deluxe’ as well as another movie titled ‘Antoine Fuqua’s Infinite’.
6. Caleb Mclaughlin
Besides being the coolest sci-fi invested black kid on ‘Stranger Things’ as Lucas Sinclair, Caleb Mclaughlin is proving to be a budding fashion icon. In his recent interview spread with FLAUNT, we see a side to Mclaughlin that we are not familiar with. His acting has been compared to that of the great Denzel Washington and he has only just begun having only recently graduated from high school two years ago. In his short time as an actor playing extras on shows like Blue Bloods and Law & Order before getting a major break on ‘Stranger Things’, McLaughlin has received over five acting nominations and won two, including a Screen Actors Guild Award. This year, he is set to star as Idris Elba’s son in a black cowboy-inspired movie called ‘Concrete Cowboy’, his first starring role.
7. Jonathan Majors
HBO’s Lovecraft Country is where Jonathan Majors is currently enjoying well-deserved recognition as Atticus Freeman. 31 years of age, Jonathan Majors is proving himself to be a versatile and confident actor. He went to Yale Drama School and secured his first major role in ‘When We Rise’ shortly after he graduated. He is steadily climbing up the ladder of success in Hollywood with an expected Marvel movie ‘Kang the Conqueror’ where he will star as a villain of Thanos.
8. Han Ye-Ri
Han Ye-ri made her crossover into the American film industry with the movie ‘Minari’ where she plays the character Monica, a wife and a mother of two kids navigating their way being of Korean descent and figuring out their American dream. K-Dramas need no extensive introductions, they have taken over and as such, Ye-Ri has always been a big star in her own right. In 2021, we can expect to see more of her on-screen and at major movie ceremonies for ‘Minari’ and all the nominations it deserves.
9. Tiffany Boone
Making her mark with titles such as ‘Little Fires Everywhere’, ‘Hunters’ and George Clooney’s ‘The Midnight Sky’, Boone is establishing herself as the talented and skilful actor that ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ has described her as being. With a background in theatre, Boone has starred alongside the best, at one point even claiming that “she gets paid for going to acting class”. She is set to shine alongside Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy in Hulu’s limited series, ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’.
10. Ncuti Gatwa
The two most heart-warming things to know about Ncuti Gatwa is that he has a laugh that takes over his whole face and whatever room he is in, and he has a massive cult following. Before appearing on his major break-out role, Gatwa had only about 500 followers on Instagram and then ‘Sex Education’ was a hit. Coming from promoting it in New York, he landed at Heathrow after a long flight and checking his phone, he had gained a hundred thousand more followers on Insta. Gwata is keeping his next steps close to his chest but he is set to be the lead character in a forthcoming American title and is also currently working on an adaptation of Jojo Moyes’, ‘The Last Letter from Your Lover’.
