The Doctor of Shannen Doherty Shares Details About Her Last Hours
Shannen Doherty lost her battle with stage four breast cancer earlier this month, having fought the illness for years. Dr. Lawrence D. Piro, her oncologist, talked about his memories of her last moments, giving those who are mourning the television star some comfort.
Shannen’s Loved Ones Were All Around Her
Shannen Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles was under Dr. Piro’s care, and the two of them had developed a close relationship. She passed suddenly on Saturday, July 13, at the age of 53, with him by her bedside. In a an interview with PEOPLE, Dr. Piro described the environment in which she passed away.
He stated, “She was surrounded by some of her very close friends in a place where she was very comfortable, sleeping, and transitioning in the last few hours.”
A small circle of people who were providing her with a great deal of support and care had gathered about the room. Dr. Piro went on, “It was lovely and kind but also solemn and depressing. “She loved life, so the hardest thing about this was that she wasn’t ready to leave.”
Doherty’s influential parts in enduring TV series have a lasting legacy. From 1990 to 1994, she became well-known as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210. From 1998 to 2001, she enthralled viewers as Prue Halliwell on Charmed. In addition to her popularity on television, Doherty was well-known for her courageous fight against cancer, which led her to become an advocate for early detection and awareness.
Shannen Fought Almost a Decade Against Cancer
In March 2015, Shannen received her initial diagnosis of breast cancer. The actress first had a number of procedures, such as hormone therapy, a single mastectomy in May 2016, chemotherapy, and radiation. Shannen was outspoken about her experience despite the difficult process, raising awareness through activism and social media.
Many were given hope when she said in 2017 that her cancer was in remission. But her struggle was far from ended. Shannen disclosed that her cancer has returned and advanced to stage four in February 2020.
Doherty’s personal life was significantly affected by her sickness, especially her marriage to Kurt Iswarienko. They got married in October 2011 after meeting in 2008. Their relationship was under tremendous pressure due to the stress and strain of her continuing health battle.
After 11 years of marriage and despite their best efforts to support one another, Doherty filed for divorce in April 2023 due to accusations that he had been unfaithful. Prior to her passing, the former couple’s divorce was still pending.
