What Happened in Vice Principals Season 2?

Season 1 of “Vice Principals” ended shockingly. After blackmailing their way into co-principal chairs, former VPs and power-hungry madmen Neil Gamby (Danny McBride) and Lee Russell (Walton Goggins) were riding high—until their rides were sent sky high.

When Gamby went to investigate the school parking lot, a masked shooter shot him twice in the chest. An unexpected event sets Season 2’s trajectory: Who shot Neil Gamby? Season 2 addresses this. “Vice Principals” is a great comedy for fans of its two stars, but it loses its way after the first few episodes.

Instead of accepting the status quo, the new season’s B-grade mundanity—sporadic laughs, forced character development, and an occasional stunted story arc—can be overlooked to make it a more intriguing and original comedy. Imagining him as the devil will ruin this viewing trick.

He’s evil, but that’s obvious. You need to see the devil inhabiting Lee Russell’s body to smile giddily when Lee pushes people’s big evil buttons. That means imagining little horns on his forehead or a red tail on his backside. Also: He’s not Gamby’s imaginary friend.

The character is too well-developed to just give Gamby bad advice. However, the demonic Lee Russell is doing that. Russell looks confused before supporting Gamby’s jealousy over his new girlfriend’s sex with others before they were together.

Russell smiles, laughs, and reassures Gamby when he feels guilty about framing a drug dealer to get expelled. Russell gives the kids a stern warning before laughing at the idea that he would question morality.

Before you trace this theory back to the series’ origins, know that doesn’t work. “Vice Principals” started poorly. Both high school vice principals hated each other, making it hard to like them. Both wanted Bill Murray’s Principal Welles’ old seat. Both wanted it.

After being passed over, their alliance to destroy Dr. Brown (Kimberly Hebert Gregory, great performance) felt like a lose-lose situation: either evil wins or nothing changes. One of these men must be the devil.

Near the end of Season 1, it became clear that these two men were not equal—at least not equally evil. Russell was more ruthless and gleeful in executing the duo’s vengeful plan. Russell reassured Gamby if he went too far. Gamby’s meanness validated Russell’s. Russell’s sadistic insistence forced Gamby to become co-principal.
