Outlander Season 5, which aired from May 2020 to May 2021, changed the show's focus from two separated lovers to a family drama with Bree and Roger (Richard Rankin) as central characters. The season was set in North Carolina from 1770 to 1772, and it was loosely based on Diana Gabaldon's fifth book, “The Fiery Cross.”
It all started with a wedding and ended with each family member accepting their place within the clan, all while those around them prepared for the coming American Revolution.
Outlander Season 5 Plot
As the American Revolutionary War looms on the horizon, Jamie and Claire strive to keep their home at Fraser's Ridge. Brianna and Roger marry, and Governor Tryon continues to press Jamie to find Murtagh, pushing Jamie to assemble a militia to fight the Regulators.
He juggles keeping his godfather safe with his responsibilities to the British, especially under the watchful eye of Lieutenant Knox, who is hell-bent on finding and killing Murtagh. Despite Murtagh's appeals for Jocasta to return his love, she goes forward with her fourth marriage, preferring the safety and stability of her plantation's future over his idealistic ideas.
When Roger's warning to Murtagh fails and Murtagh is killed, Jamie's loyalties are put to the ultimate test during the Battle of Alamance. Roger is kidnapped and erroneously hanged by the British; he lives, but the ordeal has left him devastated. In the months that follow the war, Jamie is distraught.
Meanwhile, the presence of Stephen Bonnet tests Roger and Bree's relationship, prompting Brianna to take matters into her own hands when she is kidnapped by him. Their attempt fails, and the two decide to stay at Fraser's Ridge with their huge family, viewing this as a sign of fate.
When Ian returns from his time with the Mohawk, he confronts Claire, Brianna, and Roger with information passed down to him by the Mohawk, and learns the truth about their origins.
Claire continues to defy medical conventions by making penicillin and delivering secret medical advice under a pseudonym, but her devious advice backfires. Claire is kidnapped and gang-raped by Lionel Brown and his men, but she is saved by Jamie, Fergus, Roger, and the other Ridge men.
Despite the fact that Jamie gives Lionel's body to Richard, Lionel's brother and Brownsville mayor, Richard threatens Fraser's Ridge and Jamie's family.
