Nikki Haley (January 20, 1972) is an American diplomat and politician who served as the 116th and first female governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017. She was also the 29th United States ambassador to the United Nations from January 2017 to January 2019.

Nikki Haley’s Political Career

Nikki Haley was born in Bamberg, South Carolina, and graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She worked for her family’s garment company before joining the National Association of Women Business Owners as treasurer and president. She spent three terms in the South Carolina House of Representatives after being elected in 2004.

In 2010 she was elected as the governor of South Carolina and during her third term, she was re-elected in 2014. Haley was South Carolina’s first female governor, as well as the country’s youngest and second governor of Indian origin (after fellow Republican Bobby Jindal of Louisiana). She was the first female Asian American governor and the first Indian American to serve in a presidential cabinet in 2017.

From 2017 to 2018, Haley was the United States ambassador to the United Nations. She was sworn in in January 2017 after being confirmed by the United States Senate by a 96–4 vote. In the aftermath of the 2017–2018 North Korean crisis, she reaffirmed the US determination to use military force in response to further North Korean missile testing.

She backed Israel vehemently in the UN Security Council and spearheaded the US withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council. On December 31, 2018, she resigned as Ambassador voluntarily.

Nikki Randhawa married Michael Haley in September 1996, and the couple had both Sikh and Methodist weddings. Rena (born June 8, 1998) and her son Nalin are the couple’s two children (born September 6, 2001).

In 1997, Haley made the decision to become a Christian. She and her spouse go to the United Methodist Church on a regular basis. Once or twice a year, she also attends Sikh services.
