“Super Freaky Girl” by Nicki Minaj has Disqualified from the Grammy Rap Category

Nicki Minaj’s chart-topping single ‘Super Freaky Girl’ has been formally removed from the rap category and will now compete in the pop category. Since its release, the song has topped Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart for eight consecutive weeks.

The Recording Academy’s Rap committee determined that the song will compete in the Pop category instead of the Rap category. Nicki Minaj‘s upcoming fifth studio album, ‘Super Freaky Girl,’ will be released on August 12, 2022. ‘Super Freaky Girl’ is an uplifting, filthy song that will be featured on the album. The final Grammy nominees will be announced on November 12, 2022.

The 39-year-old Trinidadian rapper was not pleased with the committee’s decision. Nickie aired her dissatisfaction on social media. Thursday she attacked the committee’s decision through a series of Instagram stories and Tweets. Nicki commented in her Instagram story, “They keep shifting the goalposts in my direction.” Why is the goalpost only moved when Nicki is involved?

According to the stories that Nicki posted, she indicated that the reason for changing the song’s genre is much more personal. Nicki’s subsequent Tweets indicate that she has taken this much more personal. Nicki said that everyone should be treated similarly, as all music and artists should be judged by the same standards.

Nicki also did not hesitate to identify the song and artist that she believes are being considered. In her tweet, she stated that if “Super Freaky Girl” is removed from the rap category, then “Big Energy” by Latto should also be removed from the rap category. The song ‘Big Energy’ is also pop-leaning and samples ‘Genius of Love by Tom Tom Clubs from 1981. Mariah Carey sampled the same tune for her number-one single “Fantasy.”

“I have no problem with getting removed from the RAP category so long as we are ALL treated EQUALLY,” she tweeted. Nicki tweeted, “If SFG (Super Freaky Girl) has 2B pushed out of RAP, then so has Big Energy! ANYONE who disagrees is either a Nicki Minaj hater or a troll.” The song “Big Energy” topped the rap chart on Billboard. The song will compete in the rap category as opposed to the pop category at the Grammys.

The lighthearted and pop-sounding song ‘Super Freaky Girl’ samples Rick James‘s 1981 single ‘Super Freak’ The Rap committee determined that the song was more pop-oriented than rap, so it would compete for pop honors rather than rap awards.

Nicki Minaj had gotten a total of ten Grammy nominations, however, she only competed in the pop category once. In 2015, she was nominated for best pop duo/group performance alongside Ariana Grande and Jessie J for the song “Bang Bang.” The song did not win any Grammys, however, it did win the 2015 Kid’s Choice Award for favorite song of the year.

The nominees for the Grammy Awards in 2023 will be announced on November 12, 2022. The live Grammy ceremony for 2023 is slated for February 5, 2023. Nicki is among the most acclaimed singers/songwriters. Throughout the year, she has released many tracks. The majority of the tracks are pop or hip-hop with her rapping or singing, such as her 2010 breakthrough solo single ‘Your Love’ and her songs ‘Super Bass’ and ‘Starships’.

Nicki Minaj has a total of ten Grammy nominations. The majority of her nominations were in the rap category, with only one nomination in the pop category. Nicki’s albums ‘Pink Friday’ and ‘The Pink Print’ were nominated for best rap albums. She has also been nominated for best rap song of 2015 for her song “Anaconda.” Her tracks Truffle Butter’ and ‘Moments 4 Truth’ were nominated for best rap performance.
