Nas has a track record of making successful early investments, notably in technology firms. Dropbox, Coinbase, Ring Lyft, Genius, and Pluto TV are among Nas’ early internet investments.

Career:

Nas played on Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque” in 1991. Nas earned a record deal with Columbia Records in mid-1992, largely to his then-manager MC Serch’s efforts. Nas debuted as a solo artist with the single “Halftime” from the soundtrack for the film Zebrahead, which was composed by MC Serch. Nas’ exceptional rhyming abilities drew a lot of attention from the hip hop scene.

Illmatic, Nas’ debut album, was released in 1994. “It Ain’t Hard to Tell,” “One Love,” and “The World Is Yours” were among the singles released by Illmatic. The Source named Illmatic as the best album of 1994. It Was Written, Nas’ second album, was released in 1996. “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” and “Street Dreams,” both featuring Lauryn Hill, were instant hits. The Firm, a supergroup comprised of Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown, and Cormega, made their debut on It Was Written.

Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment label signed The Firm, and they began work on their debut album. Cormega was sacked from the band halfway through the album’s recording. Nature became the Firm’s new fourth member. The Firm is a collaboration between Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Nature. In 1997, the album was released to mediocre reviews. Despite its platinum status, the record failed to chart, and The Firm split.

Nas went on to create nine more albums, including I Am…, Nastradamus, Stillmatic, God’s Son, Street’s Disciple, Hip Hop Is Dead, 2008’s Untitled, 2012’s Life is Good, and Nasir in 2018. He has received 13 Grammy nominations and six MTV Music Video Awards. He’s won one of the three BET Awards he’s been nominated for.

Nas has retained a deep interest and expertise in emerging technology over the years as a venture capitalist. He is a co-founder of Queensbridge Venture Partners, a venture capital business.

Over the years, Queensbridge has made dozens of investments, some of which have significantly increased in value. The majority of the firm’s investments are in the $100,000-$500,000 bracket. Every month, the fund receives over 100 presentations from new businesses seeking funding.

Dropbox, Lyft, SeatGeek, General Assembly, Robinhood, Casper, Pill Pack, Pluto TV, Coinbase, and Genius are among QueensBridge’s most successful investments.

When Amazon bought Ring for $1.1 billion in 2018, QueensBridge owned a tiny stake in the company. For his interests in Ring and Pill Pack, QueensBridge received $40 million from Amazon.

Pluto TV was purchased by Viacom for $340 million in 2019.

Coinbase’s 2013 Series B round, which raised $25 million at a $143 million value, included QueensBridge as an investor. QueensBridge’s investment was worth between $35 million and $100 million when Coinbase went public in April 2021.

Fannie Ann, Nas’ mother, died in 2002.

Nas married singer Kelis in Atlanta in 2005 after two years of courtship. Kelis filed for divorce in April 2009, while she was seven months pregnant, citing irreconcilable differences. On July 21, 2009, Kelis gave birth to Nas’s son Knight. On May 21, 2010, the couple’s divorce was finalized. Nas was accused of being physically and mentally abusive to Kelis during their marriage in 2018.

In September 2009, the IRS filed a federal tax lien against Nas for approximately $2.5 million, claiming unpaid taxes dating back to 2006.
