MACBOOK AIR
Powered by Apple‘s M1 processor, the MacBook Air is the greatest notebook available. The starting price for the device with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is $999.
This laptop shares many similarities with the Intel-powered MacBook Air announced by Apple earlier this year, including the same 2560 x 1600 display, Touch ID, 720p webcam, fingerprint sensor, and scissor-switch keyboard.
However, the new CPU is the star of this show; it is quick. In our tests, it handled intensive photo and video editing tasks better than nearly every Intel-powered laptop we’ve examined this year. It was also capable of running Shadow of the Tomb Raider at frame rates close to playable, which is quite an accomplishment for integrated graphics. At launch, these applications had not yet been optimized for the M1 CPU and ran through Apple’s Rosetta 2 translation layer; however, they functioned properly.
And the processing power did not affect the battery life; we were able to operate continuously for eight to ten hours.
MACBOOK PRO (16-INCH)
The 16-inch MacBook Pro is Apple’s most powerful laptop to date. If you are ready to pay the money (and it is a costly price), you will almost likely be satisfied with the capabilities of this machine.
In our benchmarks, which measure a variety of creative tasks such as encoding, playback, and export time, the MacBook Pro 16 performed better than any laptop we’ve ever tested; only high-end desktop PCs have come close to matching it in several of our testings. Additionally, the battery life is record-breaking.
In my tests, the 16-inch configuration with the M1 Pro processor lasted 16 hours, making it the longest-lasting laptop we’ve ever evaluated. (The M1 Max setup does not last as long, but sufficed for a full workday.)
We have virtually no other issues regarding the latest MacBook Pro. It boasts a stunning display that can reach 1,000 nits when HDR content is being played. It combines this with the greatest laptop speakers we’ve ever heard. If you’re looking for a laptop that can handle a hard workload and double as an amazing multimedia device when you’re not working, the MacBook Pro 16 is the finest option.
MACBOOK PRO (14-INCH)
If you’re a creative worker who doesn’t want to pay quite as much for the MacBook Pro 16, or if you’re looking for something more portable, the 14-inch MacBook Pro is likely a better option. This device is narrower, lighter, and less expensive than its 16-inch counterpart, yet it features the same enormous CPU options and outstanding display, although in a smaller size.
The 14-inch MacBook outscored the 16-inch MacBooks in a few of our benchmark tests. Besides size, the biggest difference between these gadgets is their battery life. The 16-inch chassis allows for a substantially larger battery, and in our testing, the 16-inch M1 Pro model lasted several hours longer than the 14-inch variant.
Apple has addressed many of the exterior flaws that reviewers experienced with prior MacBook Pro models. This gadget has a multitude of connectors, including an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and several Thunderbolt 4 ports. The infamous Touchbar has also been eliminated. HP SPECTRE X360 14
It is difficult to find a single issue with the HP Spectre x360 14. It is a very beautiful machine with a robust build and a premium appearance and feels.
The Spectre x360 14 is not just aesthetically pleasing; it is also a delight to use as a daily driver. Intel’s most recent 11th Generation processors with Iris Xe integrated graphics give a quick performance, with no slowdowns or freezes noted. And we averaged 10 hours of battery life from the device, which is one of our best results ever.
The exterior of the Spectre features a spacious 3:2 display, and if FHD resolution is not to your liking, there are OLED and 1,000-nit alternatives. There is also a stylus that magnetically attaches to the side of the Spectre, which is convenient when using the device as a tablet. This laptop’s keyboard, touchpad, audio, and port selection all rival or surpass those of the best convertibles on the market.
Such an amazing set of features does not come cheap, and many clients will find all they require in a less expensive model. Nevertheless, the Spectre x360 14 is the new benchmark for Windows convertibles. Overall, it is the greatest Windows laptop available for purchase.
ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G15
ASUS Rog Zephyrus G15 is one of the lightest 15-inch gaming laptops available, at slightly over four pounds. However, performance is not sacrificed for portability. The G15 is powered by the most advanced mobile processors from AMD and Nvidia and features a 165Hz QHD display. In our tests, the system proved capable of running even the most demanding AAA titles at QHD resolution.
Almost everything else about the G15 is also excellent: the audio quality is fantastic, the keyboard and touchpad are among the best on the market, the port selection is comprehensive, and the battery can last for more than 8.5 hours on a single charge. The Zephyrus G15 should be at the top of your list if you’re searching for a powerful gaming machine that also performs admirably as a daily driver.
ASUS CHROMEBOOK FLIP CX5
This year, Asus stunned us with their Chromebook Flip CX5, a beautiful $800 notebook that runs Chrome OS. It is as durable and well-constructed as any Windows laptop at a higher price point and features a unique, smooth texture. It has full laptop specifications, including Intel’s 11th-Generation processors and a 57Wh battery, which delivers swift performance, a long battery life, and rapid charging.
There are numerous connectors available, including HDMI and a microSD card slot. The speakers produce excellent sound, and the keyboard is comfy. Asus has not skimped on the CX5’s chassis or performance; if you’re searching for a Chromebook with a large display, this is the product to buy.
LG GRAM 17
Even if you have previously used a lightweight laptop, it is impossible to describe how light the LG Gram 17 is. It features a large 17-inch screen yet weighs only three pounds. When you pick it up, you feel as though you are not holding anything.
However, the Gram 17’s weight is not its sole distinguishing trait. In our tests, its battery life lasted for over 12 hours, making it one of the devices with the longest battery life available. There is simply little not to like about this computer, given its wonderful keyboard, robust port variety, quiet fans, and swift processor.
Not everyone requires a 17-inch display, and many of those who do are looking for a sturdy workstation that will not be moved frequently. But if you just want a large screen for your daily office work and Netflix viewing, this machine is designed for you. It is a specialized but truly impressive device with little real competition on the market today.
HP ENVY X360 13
There is no need to spend $1,000 on a premium-looking and -feeling laptop. The HP Envy x360 is the greatest affordable laptop you can get because of its durable and compact construction, stylish convertible design, and outstanding performance.
HP has brought over several features from its superb 2019 flagship, the Spectre x360, to the Envy, including the thin and light chassis and nearly bezel-free display with a screen-to-body ratio of 88 percent. The touchscreen, which supports HP’s MPP2.0 pen, is exceptionally bright and attractive. (A 300-nit, 400-nit, or 1,000-nit panel is available.) And HP has added a row of useful hotkeys to the keyboard, including microphone and webcam kill switches.
The most interesting aspect, though, lies within: the new Envy x360 is powered by the Ryzen 4000 series from AMD. My model’s Ryzen 5-4500U performed admirably under a reasonably demanding multitasking load. And AMD’s integrated Radeon graphics gave gaming performance comparable to that of a GPU with less processing power.
DELL XPS 13 2-IN-1
We recommend Dell’s most recent DELL XPS 13 2-in-1 convertible laptop if you’re searching for a device that excels in nearly every area. It sports a strong and well-constructed chassis, and almost bezel-free 16:10 touch display, and the latest Intel 11th Generation processors.
The $1,099 base model has a Core i3-1154G4 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 1920 x 1200 display, and a 256GB solid-state drive. You can configure it with a 3840 x 2400 display, a Core i7-1165G7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB solid-state drive. Additionally, you can pay an additional $50 for a white model and $60 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. There is essentially something for everyone.
Since last year’s model, Dell has made a few small adjustments to the 2-in-1 laptop. Windows Hello compatibility has been added to the webcam, and the RAM and microSD reader has been improved. The big news, however, is the new CPU and Intel’s new integrated graphics.
On our Adobe Premiere Pro export test, the XPS 13 2-in-1 performed better than any 10th Gen laptop with an integrated graphics processor. And you can even play games on this device: it surpassed 60fps in Rocket League, League of Legends, and Overwatch, and even reached 36fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the lowest settings.
That is an improvement over the performance of 10th Generation computers, and it also outperforms some 11th Generation systems (including the clamshell Dell XPS 13).
It is not flawless. The connector selection is limited (as is typical for recent XPS models) and I find the keyboard to be a bit too flat. The 2-in-1, however, shines in the fundamentals: build quality, display, performance, and battery life.
The DELL XPS 13
The Dell XPS 13 is a portable and trustworthy notebook. It is a wonderful choice for general-purpose consumers because of its attractive chassis, high-quality 16:10 display, and outstanding performance.
This late-2020 model features new Intel Tiger Lake processors, ranging from Core i3-1154G4 to Core i7-1165G7. It begins at $999, thus it is slightly less expensive than the 2-in-1.
My review unit (an i7 model) completed the duties I required of it without any lag or excess heat. It outperformed its 10th Generation predecessor in both gaming and media work. It did not perform as well as the XPS 13 2-in-1, hence it is listed lower on our list. However, if you like the appearance and feel of the XPS 13 but prefer a clamshell design (or require a more responsive keyboard), this XPS is still a fantastic alternative.
Additionally, there is an OLED model of the XPS 13 that costs $300 more than the FHD model. This model has a shorter battery life, but it produces a magnificent image.
