Lin-Manuel Miranda is allegedly in talks with Disney to develop the company’s first Latina princess. In this regard, it is the sole new development of note.
Miranda was instrumental in the development of Moana, notably in terms of the score she wrote for the film. This is consistent with the trend of companies adding a major character to their casts, and it will undoubtedly provide Disney some additional cash.
Moana bids Maui farewell and heads back to her village, where she takes over as chief and Wayfinder and prepares to lead her people on an adventure.
I don’t think the sequel will spend much time setting up the big reveal of Maui’s return and Moana’s reunion with him, but this is where the story might begin and the film could focus on Moana’s success in her new role.

Now that the groundwork has been laid, the Latina point of view may be explored more, but the film’s mystical/fantasy aspect must be maintained. Yet, to this day, we have heard nothing of any kind regarding the sequel.
