The former NBA player disclosed on Instagram that his teenage son experienced a “tough week” due to his health issues.
Matt Barnes, a former NBA player, has provided an update on his son Isaiah’s condition following his hospitalization for an appendectomy.
The 44-year-old retired forward shared a post on his Instagram account on Sunday, August 25, in which he disclosed that his high school-aged son had endured a “tough week.”
“My guys had a tough week,” Barnes wrote in the caption. “Hit by a car while jogging Wednesday 🤦🏽♂️ had a bad stomach ache Friday tried to play through the Mamba Invitational” — an elite high school basketball tournament named for the late star Kobe Bryant.
“Couldn’t sleep all Friday night decided to FINALLY tell his mom & I yesterday when he couldn’t move,” Barnes continued. “I took him to the emergency room & he had to have emergency appendix surgery.”
“Doctor said it was the largest appendix he had ever seen that hadn’t ruptured 🙏🏽,” he concluded the post, alongside a photo of his son in a hospital bed. “Appreciate the love & support from family & friends!! We’re headed home ❤️.”
Gloria Govan, Matt’s former wife and mother of Isaiah, also shared numerous updates on her Instagram Stories. On Saturday, she disclosed that Isaiah was “awaiting surgery” while his twin brother, Carter, was competing in the basketball tournament.
The 39-year-old Basketball Wives L.A. alum wrote, “It’s minor… kind of.” “An appendicitis but still!”
According to Cronkite News, Isaiah, who is a basketball player at Crespi Carmelite High School in California, provided himself with some health updates.
The adolescent uploaded a photo to his Instagram Stories on Saturday, captioning it with the phrase “[About] to go under.” The photo was taken from his hospital bed. On Sunday, he issued an additional update, stating, “We have succeeded, y’all.”
He also reposted his dad’s photo, and wrote in an Instagram Stories post, “Been one tough week man.” After Isaiah was discharged, he shared a photo of a car pulling up to the side of the road, presumably getting ready to take him home from the hospital.
“Discharged,” Isaiah wrote in the post, adding a prayer hands emoji. “Thank you to everyone for the prayers.”
Matt also shared a video of Isaiah and his identical brother reuniting following the surgery. As Isaiah returned home from the hospital, the siblings were observed embracing, and Carter examined his new wound.
“Missed you man,” Carter could be heard telling his twin in the sweet clip.
In addition to his twin sons, Matt is the father of Ashton, whom he shares with his fiancée, model Anansa Sims. The retired athlete is frequently transparent on social media regarding his assistance for his children. In honor of Carter and Isaiah’s eighth-grade graduation last year, he published a sequence of photographs.
“14yrs later & you’re off to high school!! Words can’t express how proud I am of you two,” the proud dad wrote at the time, sharing a snapshot of the boys posing with their younger brother at the graduation. “Continue moving w honor, morals, principles & respect as you guys navigate this next chapter🙏🏽. Love you two w all my heart.”
Matt spent 14 seasons in the NBA, spending two seasons with the Lakers, four with the Clippers, and just under two with the Kings.
