Is She Going to Go Back to College at 51?

Leah Remini is glad that a new part of her second act is coming to an end. The 51-year-old actress and activist said on Saturday that she had just finished the final exams for her first semester at NYU.

“It hasn’t been easy going to college for the first time at 51 after spending most of my life in a cult and only having an 8th grade education,” Remini wrote on Twitter, referring to the many years she spent as a member of the Church of Scientology.

She said, “I had my first final exams at NYU this week, and I’m glad I decided to go to school.” “You always have time. It’s tough, but it’s worth the effort.”

Remini was brought up as a Scientologist, but in 2013 she left the group. She then made “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” a docuseries that won an Emmy and looked into the controversial religion and told the stories of other people who left it.

In May, Remini posted a picture of her acceptance letter to NYU on Instagram to let people know she would be going there. She wrote in the post’s caption, “I’m so happy I’m crying, and I wanted to share this with you guys.” “This is a very big day for someone like me who grew up in a cult and whose family didn’t put much value on education. This wasn’t simple.”

She also said, “This is one of the last things I’m taking back from Scientology in my life.” I was afraid I wasn’t smart enough, worthy enough, capable enough, or old enough to do the work that would be needed, so it was hard for me to take this step. Still, I did it because a very important person in my life told me to.”

Remini told PEOPLE in February how hard it was for her to balance school, work, and being a parent. She also talked about how well her transition back to school was going. “It’s hard to work because I sometimes work from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., and then I have to read chapters and take a quiz when my brain is about to shut down.”

“But I’m doing it, and I’m proud of myself,” she said. With my degree, I might one day want to go into politics, but who knows? I’d like to do something to help the public.”
