Acknowledging she is late to keep an eye on child relative Toby, she surges home and is defied by her stepmother Irene, who then, at that point leaves for supper with Sarah’s dad Robert. Sarah discovers Toby possessing her cherished youth teddy bear, Lancelot.

Disappointed by this and his steady crying, Sarah carelessly wishes Toby to be removed by the trolls from the book. She is stunned when Toby vanishes and Jareth, the Goblin King, shows up. He offers Sarah her fantasies in return for the child, however, she declines, having in a flash lamented her desire.

Jareth hesitantly allows Sarah 13 hours to settle his maze and discover Toby before he is transformed into a troll for eternity. Sarah meets a small man named Hoggle, who helps her in entering the maze. She experiences difficulty discovering her direction from the beginning, however, meets a talking worm who accidentally sends her off course.

At the end of the story, we see Jareth decided to send the Goblin army just to stop them but the Ludo Howls defeated them and vanishes them away, and unfortunately enters the castle.

Sarah decided to face Jareth alone without the need of anyone, although at the end she added that if she need help she will call someone. In a room displayed after M. C. Escher’s Relativity, she goes up against Jareth while attempting to recover Toby.

She recounts the lines from her book that reflect her experience to that point, yet she actually can’t recall the last line. As Jareth offers Sarah her fantasies, she recollects the line, “You have no control over me!” Defeated without a moment to spare, Jareth returns Sarah and Toby home securely and turns around into the horse shelter owl, taking off.
