After graduating from college, she relocated to Washington, D.C., to seek a career as a television news reporter.
Couric’s first position was as an ABC desk assistant, where she collaborated with various people, including anchorman Sam Donaldson. She soon started working at the Washington bureau of the new Cable News Network (CNN).
The following seven years were devoted to Couric’s work at CNN bureaus across the nation as a producer and on-air reporter. In 1987, she moved back to Washington and started working as a reporter for an NBC affiliate.
NBC News’ Washington bureau hired Couric as its No. 2 reporter at the Pentagon in 1988, just before her nuptials to Washington-based attorney Jay Monahan.
