They lived in the Elmhurst neighborhood until he was seven when they moved back to California and then to New Jersey. Smollett went to high school in Paramus, New Jersey, and graduated from Paramus Catholic High School.
Jussie Smollett Career
Smollett first got a job in New York City when he was a child. From there, he became an extra in movies like “Mo' Better Blues” (1990) and “New Jack City,” which were shot in New York (1991). He got parts in the movies “The Mighty Ducks” (1992) and “North” (1994). From 1994 to 1995, he starred in the ABC sitcom “On Our Own” with all five of his real-life siblings.
He stayed out of the spotlight until 2012, when he played the main character, Magnus, in the LGBTQ romantic comedy-drama “The Skinny.” He was a guest star on an episode of “The Mindy Project” in the same year, and he was in an episode of “Revenge” in 2014.

He was on the show in seasons 1 through 5, but the last two episodes of the fifth season didn't have him because of the “attack” controversy he was involved in at the time. He was also in the show “Underground,” which starred his younger sister, Jurnee Smollett, while he was on “Empire.
Smollett has also tried to make a career out of music, in addition to acting. In 2012, he put out his first EP, “The Poisoned Hearts Club.” Then, in 2015, he said that Columbia Records had signed him to a recording contract. “Sum of My Music” was his first studio album.
It came out in 2018 on his own label, Music of Sound. Smollett also wrote several original songs for his show “Empire,” including “I Wanna Love You” and “You're So Beautiful,” which are on the album “Original Soundtrack from Season 1 of Empire” (2015).
What Happened After the “Attack” in Chicago
On January 29, 2019, Smollett told police that two white men wearing ski masks had attacked him. He said that the people who attacked him put a noose around his neck, poured gasoline all over him, beat him, and said horrible things about his race and sexuality.
In his version of what happened, the people who attacked him knew him from the TV show Empire and yelled, “This is MAGA country!” This is a reference to President Donald Trump's “Make America Great Again” slogan.
Over the next few weeks, the Chicago PD learned that Smollett probably helped plan the attack, which was carried out by two brothers who had worked as extras with him on Empire. It is said that the brothers were paid $3500 to stage the attack.
In February of 2019, a grand jury charged Smollett with filing a false police report, which is a class 4 felony. He then went to the Chicago Police Department to turn himself in. All of the charges against him were dropped in March, but the city of Chicago filed a case against him in April, which led to him being indicted on six different counts by a Cook County grand jury. Smollett pleaded not guilty both times charges were brought against him
After the attack on April 29, 2019, Fox executives said that Smollett would not be back for season 6 of “Empire.” Fox reportedly worked out a deal to pay off Smollett's season 6 contract, but the show will not be using him. In other words, he is getting paid to not work on the show for that season. On September 9, 2020, in a rare interview, Smollett talked about the event. He talked about the case in an Instagram live session with author and activist Marc Lamont Hill, and he insisted that he was not guilty.
Jussie got 150 days in jail on March 10, 2022, for lying to the police. He also has to serve 30 months of felony probation and pay the city of Chicago $120,106 in restitution.
Life at Home and Property
During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in March 2015, Smollett told the whole world that he was gay. In 2016, Smollett paid $1,687,000,000 for a home in Los Angeles. He lost $30,000 when he sold the house in July 2019.
