Julianne Hough and her former husband, Brooks Laich, both express regret regarding their failed marriage

In November 2020, Hough filed for divorce from Laich more than two years after they announced their separation.
Julianne Hough is contemplating the reasons behind her unsuccessful relationships.
On August 12, the 36-year-old adjudicator of Dancing with the Stars disclosed her prior relationships and the complications that ultimately resulted in her divorce from Brooks Laich during an episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.
“I feel like our relationship and our marriage was exactly right, and the end of it is right too,” she explained. “We both have regrets that it didn’t work out because I don’t think we had the maturity to come together.”
She went on to describe some of the dynamics in their relationship, noting that “he was contracting while I was expanding.”
“We just couldn’t find each other in that,” Hough continued. “We just went into our own protective modes. So we’ve definitely accepted what happened, but we’re sad that it didn’t work out because I’ve only dated great human beings.”
Despite their decision to go their separate ways, the television personality said Laich, 41, had “the greatest heart that I could’ve ever had the privilege of being with.”
Hough and Laich initiated their relationship in November 2013 and maintained it for two years before proclaiming their engagement on Instagram in August 2015. A romantic, outdoor ceremony was held on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where Hough spent summer holidays growing up, shortly after the former couple said “I Do” on July 8, 2017.
“When I introduced Brooks to the lake, he fell in love with this special spot, and we knew this was where we wanted to raise our family and grow old together,” Hough told of their venue at the time. “It just felt right to be married here.”
Hough and Laich shared a statement with PEOPLE in May 2020, announcing their decision to separate after quarantining the COVID-19 pandemic apart and amid mounting speculation about their marriage being on the ropes.
“We have lovingly and carefully taken the time we have needed to arrive at our decision to separate,” they wrote in their joint statement. “We share an abundance of love and respect for one another and will continue to lead with our hearts from that place. We kindly request your compassion and respect for our privacy moving forward.”
Despite rumors of reconciliation in November of that year, Hough officially filed for divorce a few months later. At the time, a source stated that “they were attempting to address the matter; however, Julianne came to the realization that she is more content with her independence.”
Brooks endeavored to provide it to her; however, he also reached his limit. In June 2022, the divorce between the couple was finalized.
The professional dancer disclosed that she was unmarried and was amenable to locating a special someone during an interview in July.
“Look, my heart is open,” she stated, emphasizing that she is “prepared for whatever is right” for her and will not “force” a romance that does not feel natural.
The actress clarified that she was relishing her life as a single woman, but she is “receptive to what may occur.”
“I am exceedingly pleased,” she concluded. “So, it’s got to be something really special.”
