Early Years of Jerry Jones

Jerry Jones was born in 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He lived in North Little Rock, Arkansas, as a child. He went to North Little Rock High School and got a football scholarship to the University of Arkansas. During college, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, co-captain of the football team, and an offensive lineman for the Southwest Conference. Jones played football with Jimmy Johnson in Arkansas. After Jones bought the Cowboys, he hired Johnson as the team’s first head coach.

After Jones graduated from college in 1965, Jimmy Hoffa, who ran the Teamsters union at the time, loaned him a million dollars so he could open several Shakey’s Pizza restaurants in Missouri. That plan didn’t work, so Jones went to work at his father’s insurance company, Modern Security Life of Springfield. He was the company’s executive vice president. In the late 1960s, he tried to start more than one Business. Jones attempted to buy the NFL’s San Diego Chargers at one point, again with money from the Teamster’s Union.

In the end, he returned to Arkansas to get his Master’s in Business, which he finished in 1970. Jones started the private company Jones Oil and Land Lease, which looks for natural resources. He spent the next 20 years making money and thinking about how he could get back into football.

Jones and Yankee Global Enterprises joined forces in 2008 to make Legends Hospitality. Legends is a company that serves entertainment venues like Cowboys Stadium with food, drinks, merchandise, retail, and stadium operations.

On February 29, 1989, Jerry Jones paid $140 million for the Dallas Cowboys. Considering inflation, that’s the same as about $300 million today. Soon after he bought the team, he fired the only coach the team had ever had, Tom Landry, and hired Jimmy Johnson, who he had played with at Arkansas. He also got rid of the general manager, Tex Schramm, and took over all football decisions.

The first year Jones owned the Cowboys, they had a 1-15 record. Jones and Johnson quickly fixed the team; the following year, they went 7-9. The Cowboys had an 11-5 record and made the playoffs in 1991, but they lost in the second round. During the 1992-1993 season, the Cowboys won Super Bowl XXVII against the Buffalo Bills. The following year, they beat the Bills again, and that time they won Super Bowl XXVIII.

In 1993, a power struggle between Jones and Johnson caused their relationship to fall apart. Then, after the Cowboys won their second Super Bowl under Johnson in March 1994, Jones upset Johnson when he told reporters that any coach could have led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. After the Cowboys won their second Super Bowl in a row, they agreed to split up on March 28, 1994, and Johnson got a $2 million bonus.

Barry Switzer also went to the University of Arkansas and took over for Johnson. He and Jones won Super Bowl XXX in 1995. On the team, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and Super Bowl XXX MVP Larry Brown were Johnson’s holdovers who stood out. Johnson was still given much credit for the third Super Bowl win since 70 percent of the starting lineup was from his time. Since Super Bowl XXX, the Cowboys have not won a Super Bowl.

The Cowboys‘ value has increased from $140 million to about $5.5 billion while Jones owns them. This has made Jones a multi-billionaire. Since 1989, many of the NFL’s successes can be traced back to Jones. For example, he pushed for the then-new network Fox to become the NFC’s leading broadcast network when ABC, CBS, and NBC tried to get the NFL to accept less money for TV rights. The move to Fox brought in a lot more money from TV and made the NFL the world’s richest sports league, with more than $10 billion in revenue each season.

Jones is one of only two league owners with the title or powers of general manager. The other is Mike Brown of Cincinnati.

The 2008 book Playing to Win by David Magee is about Jones. Jones said in the book that he fired Landry badly and was partly to blame for his relationship with Jimmy Johnson falling apart. Johnson is not in the “Ring of Honor” for the Dallas Cowboys. In 2014, he was asked why Johnson wasn’t in the Ring of Honor, even though he had won two Super Bowls as the Cowboys’ coach. Jones said: “Infidelity… I couldn’t deal with the betrayal.”

In 2017, Jones was added to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
