Ja Rule (Jeffrey Bruce Atkins) was born on February 29, 1976, in the New York borough of Queens. His parents, Debra and William Atkins raised him in the Hollis neighborhood of Chicago.
As a result of his parents’ busy schedules, Ja Rule spent a lot of time with his grandparents, who were Jehovah’s Witnesses. It was during this time that he began to practice the faith himself. He abandoned his religious beliefs when he was 12 years old and began peddling narcotics in the town of Hollis.
Because of his small stature, he found himself in a lot of disagreements with his peers at school. Ja Rule did not complete his high school education; however, he did complete his GED in 2012.
Early Life
In Hollis, a section of the Queens borough of New York City, on February 29, 1976, Jeffrey Bruce Atkins was born to Debra and Will Atkins, who raised him as their only child. His father abandoned the family when he was a child of a very young age.
In the absence of his younger sister, Kristen, who died in the womb when Atkins was 5 years old, Atkins was raised as an only child. His mother, Debra, worked in the healthcare industry, and as a result of the amount of time she spent away from home, Atkins was primarily raised by his grandparents as a Jehovah’s Witness in their home.
When Atkins was 12 years old, his mother left the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion. Atkins began selling drugs in Hollis not long after that.
Career
His professional career began in 1994 as a member of the rock band Cash Money Click. After a short period of time, he adopted the stage name “Ja Rule.” The group independently produced a number of songs, including their debut single “Get Tha Fortune,” which was released in 1994.
Because of the arrest and imprisonment of Chris Black, a member of the group, they were dropped from their record label and disbanded after only one year on the market.
Ja Rule made his first solo appearance on the song “Time to Build,” which was produced by Mic Geronimo and featured Jay-Z and DMX among others. Rule signed with Def Jam in 1998 and was featured on Jay-single Z’s “Can I Get a…?” in the same year.
Venni Vetti Vecci, his debut studio album, was released in 1999 and went on to become the number one album on the Billboard 200 chart. His second and third studio albums were both certified three times platinum and peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums charts, respectively.
His fourth studio album, released on November 19, 2002, debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and yielded two top-ten singles, both of which became hits. In 2003 and 2004, he released his fifth and sixth studio albums, respectively. He left Def Jam in 2005 after releasing a sixth studio album and a greatest hits collection.
He did not return to the music industry until February 2011, when he announced that he had begun working on a new album, “Pain is Love 2.” By the time it was published a year later, the man had completed his two-year prison sentence for tax evasion and gun possession. He was finally freed in May of this year.
The Murder Inc Records label was founded by Ja Rule and Gotti after their release from prison. In 2014, he published a memoir titled Unruly: The Highs and Lows of Becoming a Man, which chronicled his experiences as a young man. Soon after, he announced the release of his eighth studio album, which was then postponed indefinitely.
Ja Rule made an appearance on The Hamilton Mixtape in December 2016, where he rapped Hamilton’s verse in Ashanti’s song Helpless, which was released the following month. Ashanti and Ja Rule have confirmed that they are working on a new album, which was released in June 2018.
One of Ja Rule’s most popular singles is “Holla Holla,” which is followed by “Between Me and You,” “I’m Real (Murder Remix), “Ain’t It Funny”, “Always on Time,” “Mesmerize,” and “Wonderful.” He also has a number of other singles to his credit.

Legal Problems
After punching a man in the face in Toronto in 2003, Rule reached an out-of-court settlement with the victim. In 2004, he was arrested for possession of marijuana and driving with a suspended license, charges that were later dropped.
