Hocus Pocus Actor Reveals Why Original Stars Didn’t Return for Sequel!

Sean Murray knows why many of the original actors and actresses didn't come back for Hocus Pocus 2. The sequel to Hocus Pocus from 1993 will come out on Disney+ in September 2022. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy will all play the Sanderson Sisters again.
But Hocus Pocus 2 didn't bring back a lot of the original characters, like Thackery Binx (played by Chad Michael Murray), the teen who fails to save his little sister Emily from the three witches in 1693 and is cursed to live forever as a black cat.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Murray talked about the people who were back for Hocus Pocus 2. The actor from the first movie said that he and a few other stars didn't come back for Hocus Pocus 2 because the story had to move on to a new one with the Sanderson Sisters. Thackery Binx also died at the end of the first movie for Murray. Read what Murray had to say about it:
I think that Hocus Pocus is really about those three witches. It makes perfect sense to me that the witches would be a newer group that wasn't necessarily from the first group. We're all old and wrinkly now, you know. Who is looking for us?

Murray says that it's probably best that some of the actors from the first Hocus Pocus didn't come back for the second movie. Omri Katz, Thora Birch, and Vinessa Shaw are also in this group, along with Murray.
Instead of following these young characters from the first movie as they get older, the sequel introduces a whole new group of teenagers who accidentally bring back the Sanderson Sisters with the Black Flame Candle 29 years after the first movie. Becca is played by Whitney Peak, and Izzy is played by Belissa Escobedo.
By not bringing back some of the original actors, Hocus Pocus 2 had room for several new characters. Sam Richardson from Veep played Gilbert, Tony Hale played two roles, and Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso played the Mother Witch.
The creative choices seem to have paid off in the end, since the sequel got slightly better reviews than the first movie, which was called cheesy and average when it came out in 1993 but is now a cult classic. Only time will tell how people feel about Hocus Pocus 2 as time goes on.
