Gladiator 2 Release Date: Is It Renewed or Cancelled?
Since the original Gladiator’s Oscar victory and box office success, rumours of a Gladiator 2 sequel have been around for 20 years. Will they materialise? Gladiator 2 looks to still be in the works, despite the ups and downs and countless shifting plot ideas.
The story of the Roman general Maximus was presented in Gladiator, which is regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. The action film, which was directed by Ridley Scott, followed the seasoned warrior as he was made to fight as a gladiator after being taken prisoner and sold into slavery. The drama film explores themes of vengeance and stoicism in the face of tragedy, all while featuring stunning visuals and top-notch acting from an all-star ensemble.
Although not much about the follow-up has been confirmed, here is everything we currently know about Gladiator 2.
When Will Gladiator 2 Come Out?
There is no Gladiator 2 release date that has been formally confirmed. The sequel is anticipated to start principal photography sometime in mid-2023, though pre-production for the show is gearing up with casting calls and decisions being made about where to shoot. It will start production when filmmaker Ridley Scott completes Kitbag, a Napoleon biography that is his second historical epic.
This suggests that the Gladiator 2 release date could occur as soon as the end of 2024 or, possibly, as soon as 2025. In any case, the Gladiator 2 release date might be coming sooner than you think, and as more information becomes available, the picture will become clearer.

Who Will Be Cast in Gladiator 2?
Russell Crowe played the title character, Maximus, the titular general, in the original movie. Even though Crowe won’t be appearing in Gladiator 2, it was recently revealed that Paul Mescal (Normal People, Aftersun) had been chosen to take the lead in the sequel.
Despite the fact that his participation is unofficial, Deadline earlier in January revealed that the actor was among the first actors to meet with Scott for the part when the movie’s script was completed in November 2022.
According to insider sources cited by the newspaper, Mescal was “obviously Scott’s top option” for the position after their initial encounter. Fans will undoubtedly continue to wish for Crowe to play his role from the original epic in flashbacks in the sequel.
A supernatural sequel that would have brought Crowe’s character back from the grave through the body of a martyred Christian would have been written by singer-songwriter Nick Cave. The strange script was ultimately turned down, but Scott claimed last year that he had plans for Maximus to make a comeback.
Additionally, it is rumoured that the original cast members Djimon Hounsou (Black Adam, Shazam! ), Spencer Treat Clark (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story), and Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman) may all make a comeback as Lucius, Lucilla, and Maximus’s ally Juba, respectively.
Scott will return to the director’s chair for the follow-up film, working alongside screenwriter Peter Craig (The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick).
What Will Happen in Gladiator 2?
The Roman Empress Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and her son, Lucius Verus (Clark), the nephew of Commodus, whom Maximus rescued from his uncle in the previous movie, will reportedly play major roles in the sequel’s plot.
