This is the premise of the must-see Firebird, a film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Peeter Rebane that is based on the book The Story Of Roman by the Russian writer Sergey Fetisov. The film had its international premiere on March 17 at the 35th BFI Flare: London LGBTQ+ Film Festival, and it is scheduled to be distributed in UK theatres on April 16.

The Firebird Plot
Firebird is a Cold War drama based on a passionate love tale that takes place in a Soviet Air Force base in Estonia during the Cold War. The plot revolves around the lives of a young soldier named Sergey, who is counting down the days until his military service is over in the United States.
The arrival at the base in 1977 of Roman, a decorated fighter pilot, causes Sergey’s life to be turned completely around. Sergey and Roman, driven by their unmistakable connection, teeter on the precipice of love and friendship, risking their freedom and their lives to be together in the face of a communist Soviet dictatorship famed for harshly pursuing members of the LGBTQ+ community in the 1980s.
As the director Rebane explained to Deadline, “With a narrative that is as important today as it was nearly 50 years ago, it’s incredibly essential to express our basic message — that love is love.”
The Firebird’s Ensemble
Viewers may recognise Tom Prior from The Theory of Everything and Kingsman as the film’s titular character, as well as Skyfall actor Nicholas Woodeson, who also appears in the film. The film also stars Ukrainian actor Oleg Zagorodnii, Russian actress Diana Pozharskaya, and Estonian actor The film had its international premiere at the 35th BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival on 17 March 2021, screening as part of the Hearts section. The film, directed by Peeter Rebane (who is making his feature film directorial debut), has screened at festivals all over the world, including the New York Film Festival and the BFI Flare Festival in London.
