Filmmaker of Bad Behavior Alice Englert Says She ‘loved’ Working With Mother Jane Campion

After the premiere of her latest dark comedy Bad Behaviour, which she co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in with the legendary Jennifer Connelly, movieweb had a conversation with Alice Englert. Englert is well-known in Hollywood for reasons other than simply being the daughter of Academy Award–winning director Jane Campion.
Englert has even acted in a number of Campion films, including Top of the Lake and The Power of the Dog.
Englert remarked to MovieWeb, “I loved it,” recalling her previous experience directing under her mother. It was almost like, ‘Alright, you want to tell me what to do?’ I don’t like having my mother tell me what to do in the rest of my life, so I thought it was so much fun. Alright, I’ll carry out your instructions! And that was very wonderful.
We both enjoy being playful, but it was only in that area that occasionally we had a more fluid relationship. She loves giving me instructions, and I love to refuse. However, that was truly amazing. I had a great time doing that. It was quite enjoyable.”
The Heroes Are The Stunt Performers
Recently, Englert took on roles both behind and in front of the camera for the film Bad Behaviour, which centers on a mother and daughter working in the entertainment industry. Englert clarified, “It’s not inspired by my mom.
She’s an incredible character, and I adore her, but the story is inspired by retreats I attended as a teenager. I remember observing people as they began shedding the façades of adulthood to rediscover something they felt they had lost and couldn’t quite remember how to find.”
In Bad Behaviour, Englert portrays a stuntwoman named Dylan. She explained, “I wrote this out of a deep appreciation for stunts. I’ve had my share of trying to emulate Tom Cruise, thinking, ‘I can do this!’ only to end up with injuries like a busted toe. I truly admire what those stunt heroes accomplish.”
Speaking of Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick star Jennifer Connelly plays Dylan’s colorful mother in the movie. Her portrayal is so good that it may touch a chord in any dysfunctional mother-daughter dynamic anywhere. Englert revealed:
“Working with Jennifer was a pleasure. She is incredibly intelligent, amazing, and giving. She has a natural sense of humor. It turned out that I got to see every little emotion and aspect of her personality up close because I spent so much time mentoring her, which was beneficial for their mother-daughter relationship.
Something about her, in the way the mom feels so intimate and austere while also being larger than life, made sense given Dylan’s background.”
