Allegedly, Elon Musk Had an Affair With Sergey Brin’s Wife, Which Led to Their Friendship Being Severed

In the autumn of last year, Elon Musk had a brief fling with Sergey Brin’s wife, which prompted the Google co-founder to file for divorce early this year, according to persons familiar with the situation.

Even as he juggles economic obstacles, such as Tesla Inc. manufacturing disruptions and a legal battle over his wish to abandon his $44 billion offer for Twitter Inc., Mr. Musk has suffered a litany of personal crises.

According to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, Elon Musk is the richest person on the planet with a net worth of $240 billion, while Sergey Brin is ranked second with a fortune of $95 billion.

For many years, Mr. Brin and Mr. Musk, two of the most well-known businessmen in the country, were each other. Mr. Brin’s residence in Silicon Valley has long been a frequent resting place for Mr. Musk.

While Tesla was trying to raise production during the 2008 financial crisis, Mr. Brin gave Mr. Musk around $500,000 for the firm. Mr. Musk gifted one of Tesla’s first all-electric sport utility cars to Mr. Brin in 2015.

According to the persons acquainted with the situation, there has been increased friction between the two men and their teams in recent months. Some of those sources said that Mr. Brin had instructed his financial advisors to liquidate his individual holdings in Mr. Musk’s enterprises. It was impossible to determine the size of the investments or whether any transactions had taken place.

According to documents submitted to Santa Clara County Superior Court, Mr. Brin filed for divorce from Nicole Shanahan in January of this year, alleging “irreconcilable disagreements.” According to those persons, Mr. Brin filed for divorce many weeks after learning about the short relationship.

According to a close friend of Ms. Shanahan, Mr. Brin and his wife were divorced but still cohabitating at the time of the alleged relationship in early December. Mr. Brin listed December 15, 2021, as the date of the couple’s separation in the divorce petition.

Mr. Brin’s attorney declined to comment. A statement from Mr. Musk was not forthcoming. Requests for a response from Ms. Shanahan’s spokesman, who oversees a charity devoted to reproductive rights, went unanswered as well.

At the beginning of this month, Mr. Musk made an attempt to back out of a deal to purchase Twitter. He stated that the firm hadn’t supplied the required information to evaluate the frequency of phony or spam accounts. Twitter has indicated that it has “done all in its power” to deliver the information. It has filed a lawsuit against Mr. Musk in an effort to compel him to respect the agreement, and a Delaware court has agreed to fast-track the case and hold it in October.

A source who is aware of Mr. Brin and Ms. Shanahan’s relationship says that they first met at the yoga retreat Wanderlust almost seven years ago. Ms. Shanahan has been Mr. Brin’s wife for over four years. Both Mr. Brin and Ms. Shanahan had been previously wed; Mr. Brin to Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of the genomics business 23andMe Inc., and Ms. Shanahan to a finance professional respectively. Together with Ms. Wojcicki, Mr. Brin is the father of two children.

According to people who are familiar with their relationship, Mr. Brin and Ms. Shanahan’s marriage was already having difficulties in the fall of 2021. The primary cause of these difficulties was the shutdown of Covid pandemic operations, and the secondary cause was the care of their three-year-old daughter.
