Mitchell spent his sophomore year of high school at Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut, before transferring to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, for his junior and senior years. Donovan was traded to the Utah Jazz after being picked by the Denver Nuggets with the 13th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draught for the 24th pick (Tyler Lydon) and Trey Lyles. Mitchell signed a four-year rookie scale contract with the Jazz on July 5, 2017.
Mitchell broke the Jazz rookie scoring record and became the first NBA rookie since Blake Griffin in 2011 to reach 40 points in a game. In 2018, he scored 38 points in a 100-89 victory over the Houston Rockets. The following year, he recorded his first and only double of the season.
Mitchell began the 2019-20 season with 32 points and 12 assists in a 105–95 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Later that year, he scored a then-season-high 36 points against the Los Angeles Clippers in a 105–94 loss. He has been selected as a Western Conference reserve for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, marking his second straight selection.
