We were aware that Netflix planned to return to Night City, but the official confirmation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 was not known until now. Today, we have confirmation along with some fresh details about the upcoming second season. Here is everything that was recently revealed.

You might remember that Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED collaborated for a major announcement during Geeked Week back in September 2024. At that time, details were scarce, and the streamer even presented the announcement as a streaming glitch. “It appears Cyberpunk has hacked us,” said Joe Manganiello, the Geeked Week host, as a teaser clip interrupted the game they were playing on stage. Manganiello later confirmed that a new animated project was in production. However, it was unclear whether this was an entirely new project or a continuation of the existing series. Now, we have our answer.

The confirmation came during an Anime Expo 2025 panel (replay here) announcing that Season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is officially in production. This news was shared near the end of an emotional and nostalgia-filled panel featuring the English voice cast, writer Bartosz Sztybor, and a surprise appearance by director Hiroyuki Imaishi. Although the trailer was deemed too graphic to be shown at the panel (“so bloody,” joked the host), fans were given a first-look poster and a glimpse of what to expect: a darker, grittier, and more grounded continuation of Night City’s harsh world.

Sztybor, who wrote Season 1 and returns for the sequel, explained the tonal shift: “Edgerunners was like a romanticized vision of being an Edgerunner. Here, we are showing the truth.” He emphasized that this season will delve deeper emotionally, featuring more violence and realism—qualities that made the original series both beloved and heartbreaking. Just when fans thought they couldn’t be more moved, Sztybor added, “I wasn’t satisfied with the sadness that I received from the audience. So I want you to be even more sad now.”

One of the most exciting announcements was that Kai Ikarashi, the episode director behind the fan-favorite Episode 6, will take on the role of director for Season 2. Imaishi praised Ikarashi’s talent for exploring the show’s emotional depth: “He thought that Ikarashi-san was diving even more into the deep themes of Edgerunners than he initially planned.”

While David’s death was confirmed once again (“David’s dead,” Sztybor stated plainly), the team highlighted that Night City still holds many stories to tell. With a new creative team of emerging talents at Studio Trigger and a powerful, emotionally intense script underway, Season 2 promises to expand the universe and break our hearts once more. Hiroyuki Imaishi commented, “Edgerunners 2 is going to be created predominantly by a younger, fresher staff within Trigger… they’ll bring a new flavor, a new fresher take.”

The announcement was followed by a post on the official Edgerunners social pages reading:

“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is in production!

It presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077—a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge.

When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?
