How Does Core Temp Works in Different Processors?


Intel provides a certain T-junction temperature for the processor. This value is usually in the range between 85degree C and 105degree C. In the next generation processors (which starts with Nehalem), the exact T-junction value available for the software to read is contained in an MSR (Model Specific Register).

The data of temperature reading is contained in different MSR and the data is represented as a Delta in 0C between the current temperature and T-junction.

Now the actual temperature is calculated by: ‘Core Temp = T-Junction – Delta’.


ADM processors describe the temperature via a particular register in the CPU’s northbridge. Core Temp reads the value from the register and uses a formula provides by the processor (AMD) to calculate the current temperature.


In VIA processors Core Temp is capable of reading the temperature of each core without any need of calculation or conversion. The thermal sensor present in the processor provides an exact value for temperature in Celsius.

How Accurate is Core Temp?

As it is mentioned above, the core temp gets the reading directly from the DTS (Digital Thermal Sensor) which is inbuilt in the processor, getting an error is near to impossible.

But there are always some exceptional cases that is why saying that this program gives 100 percent accurate reading all the time is not right.
