They return to Chapelwaite, where Tane and Honor are awaiting their arrival. Their discomfort stems from the fact that their sister is now a vampire. Rebecca attempts to bring them together and provide comfort.

Charles now formulates a plan to protect his family from the vampires still searching for De Vermis Mysteriis. He becomes a vampire and requests that the local physician sew the book inside him. With the book sewed inside and his transformation into a vampire complete, Charles departs for the sea, leaving Rebecca and Abel behind with his family.
