Celine Dion Makes a Comeback at the 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony

At the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Celine Dion triumphantly returned to the stage for the first time since she battled stiff person syndrome.

The 56-year-old Canadian singer wowed the crowd with a performance beneath the glittering Eiffel Tower. Celine chose a stunning gown adorned with silver beads that mirrored the famous landmark’s sheen. The singer broke down in tears during her once-in-a-lifetime concert.

Celine had not performed in front of a huge crowd since 2019. When the singer opened the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games with a performance of “The Power of the Dream,” it was her second Olympic Games.

Speaking French from an early age, Celine was reared in Charlemagne, Quebec. Her fluency in the national language delighted people taking in the scene along the Seine River.

Fans have been anticipating the performance of the songbird of “My Heart Will Go On” since her arrival in Paris on Tuesday, July 23.

It became evident that Celine was in the French capital for the games even though she had not confirmed that she would be performing.

On Wednesday, July 24, the Grammy winner posted pictures from her visit of The Louvre. “Every time I visit Paris again, I’m reminded that there is still so much joy and beauty in the world.” I adore Paris, and I’m overjoyed to be returning! She exclaimed in the caption, “Thank you to our wonderful friends at The Louvre!”

In an April interview with Vogue France, Celine first alluded to her visit to Paris, but many fans were unaware that it would be for the Olympics.

“I have made the decision to work with a medical team with every fiber of my being, from head to toe. My goal is to reach my full potential. “Seeing the Eiffel Tower again is my goal,” she declared to the newspaper.

The vocalist of “Because You Loved Me” had two successful residency performances in Las Vegas and was a mainstay. She launched “A New Day” in 2003 and it ran for five years. In 2011, she came back to Caesars Palace for a three-year run with a second residency.

After experiencing muscular spasms, Celine postponed her third residency in 2021 out of concern for her health.

In a heartfelt Instagram video posted in December 2022, she announced her decision to cancel all of her scheduled comeback shows. “I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through,” she said to her fans.

“I was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare neurological syndrome, affecting approximately one in a million people,” she explained, referring to the effects of stiff person syndrome. “This diagnosis has clarified that it is the cause of all the spasms I’ve been experiencing.”

These spasms impacted “every aspect” of her daily life. Celine shared that the disorder had been “making it difficult to walk and preventing me from using my vocal cords to sing as I used to.”

In the June 2024 documentary, “I Am: Celine Dion,” the “Power of Love” singer gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at her struggle with stiff person syndrome.
