Iker Casillas (born May 20, 1981) is a former goalkeeper for the Spanish national team. Casillas is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, earning the nickname “San Iker” (“Saint Iker“) for his ability to make remarkable saves. He’s noted for his quick reactions, athleticism, and shot-stopping skills.
Casillas, who spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid. He is one of the few players to appear in over 1000 professional matches. He holds the record for the cleanest sheets in both the UEFA Champions League and the Spain national team.

Casillas Early Life
Casillas was born to José Luis Casillas, a civil servant in the Ministry of Education. Mara del Carmen Fernández González, a hairdresser, on May 20, 1981 in Móstoles, Madrid province. Both of his parents had relocated from Navalacruz, vila. Unai Casillas, Casillas’ seven-year-younger brother used to play central midfield for CD Móstoles.
Because of a family connection to the territory, the brothers’ forenames are Basque. Their paternal grandfather – a Civil Guard officer – was posted to Bilbao and settled there. Their father grew up there. Iker also lived in the area as a small boy before the family moved to Madrid.
Casillas failed to post his father’s weekend football predictions when he was a small child. His father had correctly predicted all 15 matches, and the family lost an estimated €1.2 million (£1 million).
Casillas Professional Career
Casillas began his professional career with the Real Madrid youth team before being promoted to the first team in 1999. He became the youngest goalkeeper to play in the Champions League final and win the trophy, at the age of 19 years and four days.
Casillas quickly established himself as Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper, winning two Champions Leagues and La Liga crowns in his first three seasons. Casillas won five La Liga titles, four Supercopa de Espana titles, two Copa del Rey titles, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, and one Intercontinental Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup throughout his illustrious time in Madrid.
Casillas joined FC Porto on a free transfer in 2015 after 25 years with Real Madrid, when he won the Primeira Liga and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. He broke the record for most consecutive seasons played in the UEFA Champions League (20) and appearances in the competition while at Porto (177).
After nearly a year on the sidelines due to a heart attack he experienced during a training session with Porto in May 2019, he finished his playing career in February 2020.
Casillas World Cups Journey
Casillas is the joint ninth most capped footballer of all time, with 167 international caps. Casillas was an unused substitute at UEFA Euro 2000, but by the 2002 World Cup, he had established himself as the country’s first-choice goalkeeper, and he went on to play in UEFA Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.
He was named captain in 2008, and he led the team to the European Championship victory the following year. Casillas also helped Spain win their first World Cup in 2010. Keeping a tournament record of five clean sheets and collecting the Yashin Award for best goalkeeper.

Casillas dated beauty pageant winner Eva González from 2004 to 2008. From 2009 to 2021, Casillas was in a relationship with sports journalist Sara Carbonero.
Martin, their son, was born in Madrid on January 3, 2014. The couple revealed they were expecting their second child in November 2015. The couple tied the knot on March 20, 2016. Sara gave birth to the couple’s second child, Lucas, on June 2, 2016. Casillas and Sara announced their separation on March 12, 2021, after five years of marriage.
Casillas was transported to the hospital on 1 May 2019. During Porto’s morning training session after suffering a heart attack at the club’s training site, where his condition was stabilized. Later that evening, Casillas, whose position had improved and posted a statement on Twitter with a photo of himself giving a thumbs up and thanking everyone for their support.
It was later that month that his wife was diagnosed with cancer. In his honour, a street in Móstoles has been called Avenida de Iker Casillas. Casillas announced his desire to run for president of the RFEF in the presidential elections on February 17, 2020.
