Bradley Cooper and Will Arnett go way back.
On Saturday, August 17, at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York, the duo enjoyed a delightful reunion at SiriusXM’s SmartLess podcast taping.
The Maestro actor, 49, engaged in conversation with podcast presenters Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, as well as their families and special guest Oz Pearlman, following the taping.
Howard Stern and his wife Beth, Jimmy Fallon and his wife Nancy Juvonen, Jon Hamm and his wife Anna Osceola, Chad Smith, and Shawn Levy were also notable attendees at the affair.
Cooper has a strong bond with the triumvirate, as he shared an emotional tale about being neighbors with the Arrested Development alum on their podcast in 2022. Cooper stated that the alum “changed his entire life.”
The actor reflected on his time in the comedy scene during the early 2000s and the “mean humor” trend that was prevalent at the time. Cooper stated that he initially gravitated toward the genre of comedy due to his “insecurity,” but he subsequently discovered that it had detrimental consequences, particularly when combined with his prior alcoholism.
“Will, do you remember this?” Cooper asked on the podcast. “I’ll never forget, man, we were living next to each other, and Will came into where I was living and he’s like, ‘Hey, man, we had dinner the night before.’ “
He paused before saying, “I know you’re not supposed to cry on the show. Sorry, this is pretty emotional. I’m not crying… but I’ll never forget it.”
Cooper continued to describe Arnett as someone who “can be mean, but there’s no ill will,” saying his behavior is typically reserved for close friends. “But I didn’t know Will that well then.”
The Oscar nominee recalled that his neighbor inquired about the dinner they had recently attended. “How’d you think that went?” At that point, Arnett inquired.
“I was like, I remember being at the dinner thinking I was so funny. And I thought these two guys, who were my heroes, thought that I was so funny. I don’t know if you remember this, Will. I was like, ‘Oh, I thought it was great.’ And Will, tells me, ‘You were a real asshole, man, you were a real asshole,’ ” Cooper said.
The Hangover star gasped before being asked if he had put his dogs out. Arnett said, “I think they need the bathroom,” as the actor looked confused. They stand at the entrance.”
Cooper stated it was “the first time I recognized I had a drug and alcohol issue. Will told me that. I’ll never forget. I said, “Oh, the guy I think is doing mean humor is telling me the truth about that.”
His conclusion: “And it changed my entire life.”
Cooper revealed his drug difficulties on Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge in 2023. The actor says he was “very lucky” to overcome cocaine and alcohol addiction. He says he “Been sober for 19 years, started at 29. Luck has been with me.”
Arnett has also discussed his drinking in BoJack Horseman and Flaked.
They are developing and co-starring in Is This Thing On?, which Cooper will direct, according to Deadline in 2023.
An episode of SmartLess will be broadcast live on SiriusXM and the app on September 9. On September 16, it will be accessible on additional podcast platforms.
