Robert “Bobby” Barisford Brown is a Boston-based American R&B singer, composer, dancer, and actor.
Brown is most known for his second album, ‘Don’t Be Cruel,’ which produced a series of smash songs including ‘My Prerogative’ and ‘Every Little Step.’ Between 1986 and 1993, he enjoyed a series of top 10 Billboard chart successes.
Early Life
Robert Barisford Brown was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 5, 1969. He was raised in the Roxbury Orchard Park Projects as one of eight children. Brown witnessed artist James Brown perform in his hometown when he was three years old, and this sparked his desire to be a performer. He would eventually join the choir at his church.
Brown had a rough upbringing that was scarred by violence. Brown and his buddies finally resorted to stealing since his parents—a substitute teacher and a construction worker—couldn’t afford some of the items he desired as a youngster. At the age of eleven, one of his close friends was stabbed to death, which marked a turning point in his life.
Brown, just 12, and two of his boyhood buddies established the band New Edition in 1981. A year later, their manager’s nephew joined the band, and they were officially a quintet.
Despite multiple successful tours, albums, and singles, Brown would later say that as a member of the group, he only received “$500 and a VCR.” In 1986, he departed the band to pursue a solo career.
Career Beginning
A group of boyhood pals from Boston’s Orchard Park Projects, including 9-year-old Brown and his high school classmates Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Travis Pettus, and Corey Rackley, came together to form New Edition.
Tresvant had been a friend of Brown’s since they were young. In addition to Pettus’ departure from the ensemble, Bell, Tresvant, Bivins, and Brown formed a quartet. With Brooke Payne’s nephew Ronnie DeVoe as a fifth member in 1982, they became a quintet for the first time.
With both MCA and Steven Machat as his manager following his departure from New Edition, Brown inked a solo deal with the label that Brown had previously been promised a solo deal with if he left the group.
During this time, Brown worked on his follow-up record. Brown began working with prominent R&B producers and songwriters like Babyface, Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, and Teddy Riley thanks to Machaut and MCA manager Louis Silas.

Personal life
Unfortunately, his personal life spiraled out of control just as Brown’s music career was at its pinnacle. He became regarded as a womanizer and hard partyer.
Brown and Houston married on July 18, 1992, at Houston’s estate. Bobbi Kristina, the couple’s sole child, was born in 1993. Their 15-year marriage was marred by excessive drinking, drug use, adultery, and physical violence. Brown was arrested several times for drunk driving, assault, and other offenses. The couple’s personal difficulties provided plenty of fodder for the tabloids, and their marriage ended in divorce in 2007.
Brown had a kid, Cassius, with his manager and two-year girlfriend, Alicia Etheredge, in 2009. They were engaged in May 2010 and married in June 2012 in Hawaii in a ceremony. They had two girls since their wedding: Bodhi Jameson Rein in 2015 and Hendrix Estelle Sheba in 2016.
Brown has three children with two separate women prior to his partnerships with Houston and Etheredge. Landon was born in 1986 to Melika Williams, and La’Princia and Bobby Jr. were born to Kim Ward in 1989 and 1992, respectively.
Whitney Houston died on February 11, 2012, at the age of 48. Houston’s body was discovered at the Beverly Hilton. According to the coroner’s findings, she drowned in the bathtub by accident, and heart disease and cocaine usage were also causes. Bobbi Kristina was found unconscious in her bathtub three years later and died months later in hospice care at the age of 22.
