Megamind is a great animated movie about rebelling against the roles that society tells you to play. It is on almost every list of underrated animated films. The main villain, whose voice is done by the famous Will Ferrell, is a blue-skinned alien with a big head who came to Earth as a baby.
His main enemy, Metro Man, played by Brad Pitt, has a similar backstory, except that he ended up in a mansion and Megamind in prison. Right there, their story is set. One will become a hero, and the other will become his rival, always trying to beat him but constantly failing.
That is until Megamind finally kills Metro Man. But as it turns out, Megamind quickly loses his taste for victory and falls into a deep existential depression because he no longer has anyone to fight. He then comes up with a plan to make a new superhero, but that doesn't work out well either.
Megamind stands out because of its central message, which is that it's never too late to try something new. It's also full of memes and very funny.
An Emergency is, on the surface, a classic college comedy about three friends having a wild night. Sean, Kunle, and Carlos are regular college students who want to go out and party. Their goal is to go to seven frat parties in one Night. When you dig a little deeper, you'll find an exciting satire about how the world judges young people of colour and how that makes the people who are considered feel anxious.
Unfortunately, their Night goes wrong when they find a white woman who is underage and unconscious in Carlos' house. Now, the intelligent thing to do would be to call the police, but because they are men of colour, the three friends are worried about how the cops will see the situation.
So starts a crazy adventure with a series of painful events that keep getting worse. It is a sharp satire with great acting and a story that is very relevant to our time.
Arrival has a lot going on, and it may be Denis Villeneuve's best movie to date. First, it's one of the most realistic stories about the first time humans met aliens. Then, it's a beautiful look at how language affects how we see the world. But above all else, Arrival is about how to make meaningful connections with people you care about when you know that time will destroy everything.
By breaking the rules of linear time, “Arrival” tells a bittersweet love story that we know will end in tragedy. And by doing this, the movie dares to ask if it's enough to enjoy the happy, possibly short time we have with someone we love, or if knowing that the future will be painful will keep us from appreciating the present.
It's intelligent, emotional, and sad, perfectly walking the line between drama and science fiction.
A Quiet Place Part II (2021)
People think A Quiet Place, which came out in 2018, is one of the unique horror movies of the last 10 years. So, it's a big deal when we say A Quiet Place II, which comes out in 2021, might be even better. The post-apocalyptic film picks up where the first one left off and adds exciting new things to the series' world.
This horror movie sequel is great to watch because it's scary and gives you more information about the monsters from the first movie. Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe are back as the Abbott family, and Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy join the world as interesting new characters.
Again, Blunt and Simmonds are excellent as the mother and daughter, and Murphy's performance shows why he is one of the best actors working right now.
Troop Zero (2019)
This movie is for every little girl who wants to follow her dreams. Troop Zero is based on Lucy Alibar's play Christmas and Jubilee Behold the Meteor Shower. It's about a girl named Christmas Flint who lives in rural Georgia, where she has big dreams but few opportunities.
But Christmas is like her namesake in that she won't give up on her dream to go to space. Christmas and her friends get together to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime chance for their Birdie Scout troop to be recorded by NASA for the Voyager Golden Record.
Troop Zero is a movie that takes place in 1977. It has all the retro elements you want in a film, and the stars give great performances. The movie is funny, colourful, and makes you feel good.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a great movie to watch when you want to feel good. The movie's story isn't anything new, but it has enough heart and charm to make you feel warm and fuzzy, which is what a good romantic comedy should do. The stars are the real stars of the movie.
Margaret and Mark, the movie's main characters, were played by Kathryn Newton and Kyle Allen, who did good, likeable jobs. The movie's main idea is a time loop, like in Groundhog Day or Russian Doll. The twist is that Mark, the person stuck in the loop, doesn't want to get out of it.
Mark's perfect day keeps happening repeatedly, but things change when he meets Margaret, who is also stuck in the same loop. Soon, the two teens start to work together to figure out how they got stuck in the loop and decide if they want to try to get out. This movie is light and heartwarming to watch with some popcorn on the couch.
Black as Night (2021)
Black as Night isn't a scary horror movie, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great movie. The film is excellent for people who like supernatural teen dramas. The movie, part of the Welcome to the Blumhouse collection, is about a teenage girl who finds out that vampires are stalking the streets of New Orleans.
With the help of her friends, she goes out to fight these forces of the Night while also looking for revenge for the death of a family member. It's more of an action than a horror movie, but it has just enough to keep you entertained.
Val Kilmer is without a doubt one of the most famous actors ever. So when you hear about a documentary about his life and career that also has footage shot by Kilmer that has never been seen before, it's hard to say no. Val by Leo Scott and Ting Poo is an intimate and exciting look at Kilmer's life that more than lives up to its promise.
It turns out that Val Kilmer has made a lot of videos throughout his life, and this massive collection of self-shot footage is what the documentary is mostly about. Val also talks about how Kilmer's fight with throat cancer changed his life. It's a gorgeous watch that lets us see the talented actor in a way we've never seen him before.
This coming-of-age comedy-drama is one of Wes Anderson's most underrated films. It's a weird and wonderful take on the romantic comedy genre. Max Fischer, who Jason Schwartzman plays, is a teen with a problem: he has a crush on a girl. Rosemary Cross, played by Olivia Williams, is a widowed first-grade teacher with who he has a passion.
She tries to talk him out of it. So, Max goes to Herman Blume, a businessman whose kids go to the Rushmore Academy with Max. Bill Murray plays Herman Blume. The movie is based on the friendship between Max and Herman. When Herman starts to see Rosemary, their company turns into a fierce and strange rivalry.
Rushmore is a must-see for fans of Wes Anderson, who wrote it with his frequent writing partner Owen Wilson.
Guava Island (2019)
With his writing, directing, and producing, as well as his singing under the name Childish Gambino, Donald Glover has proven himself to be a multitalented star. Glover plays a musician and actor in this 2019 movie with Rihanna, a musician, and actor. He also helped Ibra Ake, Jamal Olori, Fam Udeorji, and his brother Stephen Glover develop the story.
The story of Guava Island is about a talented musician named Deni Maroon (Glover) who lives on the island with the same name. A shady businessman who employs almost everyone on Guava Island always makes life hard for the people there. So Deni plans a music festival to give the island's people a day to party.
Many of Glover's biggest hits, like “This Is America,” “Summertime Magic,” and “Feels Like Summer,” are in the movie, which is an unusual musical. It's fun to watch because it has excellent music and a story like a fable.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Many things can be said about O Brother, Where Art Thou? It's the eighth movie by the Coen Brothers, and it was meant to be based on Homer's Odyssey (even though neither of them had read the original classic). It's a crime-comedy musical with just the right amount of drama and a healthy dose of magical realism.
It's a great satire that tells a story like an old American tall tale. You could even think of it as a disaster film. In short, it's a film made by the Coen Brothers. During the Great Depression, three escaped prisoners accused of being prophets went on an epic journey across rural Mississippi in search of buried treasure.
Along the way, they meet a daring bank robber, a musician with Faustian roots, strange women who might be witches, and racist politicians. And somewhere in the middle of all that, they also record a well-known folk song.
Lucy and Desi (2022)
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz are well-known comedy stars. That's pretty much a fact that can't be changed. What most people don't know about the stars of “I Love Lucy” is how they first started working together. And that is what Lucy and Desi are all about.
This Amy Poehler-directed documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at how these two stars first came together and how they became one of the most admired power couples of their time. Another item on this list is also about Ball and Arnaz, but this movie is the best way to learn about their lives in a way that isn't made up.
Being single is all there is to the single life. It doesn't need any thought. But it does require a commitment to living a chaste and holy life, which is what everyone is called to do. Adam becomes interested in Lily and tells her one of their secrets. This secret involved two large barrels, which created a drink of some kind.
I thought this was it. I thought this was when Lily discovered that these two people were serial killers and that the other two hikers were in the barrels.
