Atlanta Braves Origins
The moniker “Braves,” first used in 1912, is derived from a Native American phrase for a warrior. The team is known as “the Bravos” and “America’s Team” because their games were shown nationally on TBS from the 1970s until 2007, earning it a nationwide following.
The Boston Red Stockings (not to be confused with the Boston Red Sox of the American League) were founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1871. According to the team, it is “America’s oldest continually operating professional sports franchise.” The Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs are the two remaining charter franchises in the National League.
Atlanta Braves Returning to the Postseason and Winning the World Series
At the Atlanta Braves fan fest on January 27, 2018, the Braves unveiled a new mascot dubbed Blooper. After “Homer of the Brave” retired, Blooper took over as the team’s mascot. When the Braves went 90–72 in 2018, they started a new NL East division titles streak. Their 97–65 record in 2019 was their best since 2003. However, the Braves did not go past the Division Series in either season.
The Braves lead the Dodgers 3–1 in the National League Championship Series in 2020, but the Dodgers rallied to win the series and go to the World Series. The Braves advanced to the NLCS in 2021 by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 3–1 in the NLDS, which included a game-winning home run by Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 4.
With the score knotted at 4, Freeman hit a solo home run to centre field, giving the Braves a 5–4 lead heading into the ninth inning. Will Smith retired the side after Eduardo Escobar hit a leadoff single to secure the Braves’ NLCS berth.
The Braves won the National League Championship Series in six games on October 23, 2021, a rematch of the 2020 NLCS, advancing to the World Series for the first time since 1999 and securing their first pennant in 22 years. They won their fourth World Series triumph in six games against the Houston Astros.
Atlanta Braves Mlb Lineup and Rotation Projections for the 2022 Season
Atlanta Braves Announced Starting Lineup
- Ozzie Albies (2B)
- Austin Riley (3B)
- Matt Olson (1B)
- Marcell Ozuna (RF)
- Eddie Rosario (LF)
- Adam Duvall (CF)
- Orlando Arcia (DH)
- Tyler d’Arnaud (C)
- Dansby Swanson (SS)
Ronald Acuna Jr., who should be able to return to the lineup as the DH by the end of April, is the most important element absent from this roster. He is on schedule to return to the outfield in May if his recovery goes smoothly. Freddie Freeman, a long-time Brave, left free agency, but Atlanta signed Matt Olson, a four-and-a-half-year younger version of Freeman. The Braves were raised by trade deadline trades in 2021 and will most likely be in the market for another bat this year, especially with the addition of a designated hitter in the National League.
Projected Rotation
- Charlie Morton
- Max Fried
- Ian Anderson
- Huascar Ynoa
- Kyle Wright
When Morton took a strong grounder off the shin in the first game of the 2021 World Series, he earned the admiration of all Braves fans. He ended up exiting the game with a broken leg, but not before getting three outs. Fried, Anderson, Ynoa, and Wright were all part of the Braves’ recent youth movement.
The Braves farm system is now depleted, so these young players will have to stand up. Ynoa, who hit two home runs last season, will most likely be the only one of the group who will miss hitting this season.
