At the ESPY Awards, Prince Harry Appeared To Make A Reference To Princess Diana
Prince Harry was presented with the Pat Tillman ESPY Award on July 11. ESPN established an award in honor of football star Pat Tillman, who left the NFL to enlist in the military after the 9/11 attacks. The Prince was given the honor this year because of his efforts on the Invictus Game.
He complimented Pat Tillman’s mother in a speech that was quite poignant and brought back memories of his own mother, Diana. He and Meghan Markle are always trying to preserve the legacy of the late Princess. In tribute to Diana, Meghan even recently wore a piece of her jewelry. The Prince’s statement demonstrated how much he will always adore his mother and cherish their time together.
Prince Harry Discusses The Mother-Son Relationship
At the 2024 ESPY Awards, Prince Harry accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service this year. Taking use of the occasion, he paid tribute to the late Princess Diana. It was evident to all that he was speaking from personal experience when he spoke to Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary Tillman, about the unbreakable tie between a mother and her child and how it can withstand any catastrophe.
“I want to start by sincerely thanking everyone at the Pat Tillman Foundation, especially Marie Tillman Shenton, who is very honored to be here with me tonight. Harry remarked in his address, “I’d also like to honor the Tillman family, especially Mrs. Mary Tillman, Pat’s mother. “I respect her advocacy for Pat’s legacy, as it is very personal.”
He continued, clearly showing emotion in front of the audience, “The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.”
The Prince invited the athletes from the Invictus Games to join him on stage while acknowledging them during his address.
“In actuality, I am here speaking on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation and the thousands of veterans and service members from over 20 countries who have helped to make the Invictus Games a reality, not as Prince Harry, the winner of the Pat Tillman Award. “They deserve this award, not me,” he remarked, showing great humility.
Pat Tillman’s Mother Didn’t Feel Overjoyed When Prince Harry Won the Prize
Although Prince Harry felt privileged to receive the award, his happiness was not shared by everyone. Even Pat Tillman’s mother was dubious about the Prince winning the prize, in fact.
Mary Tillman was initially outraged and it seems that she was not consulted about it.
“I am astonished that they chose such a controversial and divisive figure for the award,” she commented upon hearing that Prince Harry would receive the award in her son’s honor for his “tireless efforts in making a positive impact on the veteran community through the power of sport” with his Invictus Games.
“There are much more suitable receivers. There are those in the veteran community that are working incredibly hard to support veterans. These people lack Prince Harry’s privileges, connections, wealth, and resources. Such people, in my opinion, ought to be acknowledged.”
She wasn’t the only one who was hesitant about the choice; Prince Harry’s great performance at the awards ceremony garnered a lot of criticism for ESPN, but it appears that the public’s perception has changed.
